“Is franchising doomed?” I’ve been asked that more than once in the past year. ➜ Rising costs. ➜ AI eating jobs. ➜ Tighter lending. ➜ Labor shortages. ➜ TikTok is convincing everyone they should be part of the gig economy or start a drop-shipping empire. Here’s my answer: No, franchising isn’t doomed. But lazy franchising is. The kind where: ➜ The brand stops innovating ➜ The operators stop adapting ➜ And the system forgets why it exists in the first place But the franchise model itself? It’s one of the most resilient, scalable, and proven business frameworks on the planet. In 2025, it’s still growing faster than the rest of the U.S. economy. (Source:IFA) Why? People want built-in support. They want systems that shorten the distance between idea and income. Franchising isn’t fading. It’s evolving. The next generation of operators just need to think bigger, build smarter, and lead with purpose. Because the model still works. You just have to as well. 📌 What do you think is "doomed" in our economy today? = I’m Ryan Zink. I lead a team of Super Sidekicks on a mission to reduce your risk when buying a franchise. The next wave of franchise growth isn’t coming from where you'd expect. According to the IFA’s 2025 outlook, the fastest-growing categories this year are: 1. Personal services 2. Business services 3. And, yes, food [but with a twist] This shift says a lot about where the world is heading: ➜ People are outsourcing their time more than ever. ➜ They’re prioritizing wellness and convenience. And small businesses? They’re hungry for outsourced support. From HR to cleaning to cost-cutting. If you're thinking about getting into franchising, ask yourself: ➜ What do I know? ➜ What do I love? ➜ And where is the demand already rising? The opportunity isn't always in the biggest brand. It’s in the right category at the right time. And right now? Service is scaling. 📌 Where does what you know meet what you love? = I’m Ryan Zink. 9 double yolk eggs in one carton. What are the odds? I cracked open the first egg this morning. Double yolk. Second egg. Double yolk. By the fourth egg, I'm thinking - is this even real? Nine eggs in. Nine double yolks. The odds? About 1 in about almost never (I never did like statistics at uni). I should've bought a lottery ticket instead. But it got me thinking about workplace investigations - it didn't really, but it is obligatory that I link this back to a work-based lesson 🤔 Sometimes you get that case where every witness tells the exact same story. Word for word. Perfect alignment. Your gut tells you something's off. Just like 9 double yolks don't happen naturally, neither does perfect witness testimony. Real memories are messy. People remember different details. They often disagree on precise timelines. They focus on what mattered to them. So when everyone's story matches perfectly, that's your double yolk moment. Time to dig deeper. What's the most statistically improbable thing you've witnessed? ---- Like this post? Like 👍 | Comment ✍ | Repost ♻️ | Save 🗄️ #humanresources #pointyendofhr #employmentlaw

An IT technician joined a deposition mid-testimony to fix an unrelated issue. He accidentally changed participant permissions. An attorney got removed from the meeting. Others were muted. The witness kept answering questions. Nobody did anything wrong on purpose. But someone had host control over a proceeding they weren't responsible for protecting, and that's all it took. What followed wasn't a quick fix. It was a dispute about whether testimony given during that window should stay on the record. Here's what most firms don't realize: when a party hosts their own remote deposition, they control who gets admitted, who gets muted, who gets removed, and what happens when something breaks. That's not an administrative function. That's a procedural safeguard. And it shouldn't belong to someone with a stake in the outcome. In my latest article, I break down: What neutral hosting actually involves (it's not just sending the Zoom link) The "power through" trap that creates downstream problems Our hard rule when someone loses connectivity mid-testimony The 10 settings we lock down before testimony starts The record is only useful if it's complete. It's only complete if the conditions that produced it were controlled. "We'll sort the exhibits out later." That sentence is where your case gets weaker. We watched a deposition stop cold because a witness only had 9 pages of a 14-page exhibit. Everyone had to compare page counts while the clock ran. That's not a rare glitch. It's what happens when nobody controls the exhibit workflow. Here's what most firms don't think about until it's too late: Who actually retains the marked exhibit after the deposition ends? Is the witness looking at the same version as counsel and the reporter? Does the transcript match what was really introduced? We've seen impeachment moments fall apart because a document was shared a beat too early. We've seen clients come back weeks later, building a trial exhibit list, only to discover the file attached to the transcript wasn't what they thought was marked. The fix isn't more technology. It's one controlled source, from the moment the exhibit is introduced to final delivery. In this week's article, I break down the controlled-release workflow we use, what an exhibit-custody stipulation should cover, and the single question every deposition should answer before anyone logs off. Has exhibit confusion ever come back to bite your case? Drop it below. Repost if your team has chased down "the real version" of an exhibit before.

Qualität: Ein Framework verhindert "Shit in, shit out".

When operations wind down, people often think the risks do too. In reality, that’s when things can get messy. Decommissioning means dismantling systems never designed to be taken apart, running on temporary setups, and relying on contractor teams who may not know the site inside out. No surprise then: up to 90% of incidents involve contractors, and organisational factors like weak supervision and poor change management appear in over 80% of cases. Winding down doesn’t mean switching off safety. 📘 Read DEKRA’s whitepaper: 👉 https://lnkd.in/eNgkCZna It’s a quick three-minute read - download it now! #ProcessSafety #Decommissioning #HumanPerformance #LeadershipInSafety #DEKRA

PE Firms are doubling down on Continuation Funds (CFs) more than ever. They must increase their odds of success. When General Partners (GPs) want to keep an asset, they almost always increase their ownership stake (median range from 3% to 6%). They are doubling down on an already lucrative asset. It would be a huge mistake to let the bet ride without increasing the odds of success. The GP needs to maximize the returns on that 6% by increasing revenue growth performance. Working backwards from IRR, these are the exact levers you need to pull that can yield 5-15% to the topline: 1. Optimize pricing on an annual basis to further spread EBIDTA margin 2. Generate more opportunities at the top of the funnel will increased lead flow 3. Improve the pipeline with higher sales price, sales cycle length, and win rate It will work. So why are PE firms investing in CFs? There are three reasons: 1. Limited Partners (LP) need to liquidate from an old vintage fund 2. General Partners (GP) have a great asset and want to keep it 3. Attractive in well-capitalized secondary markets that value liquidity These funds are shorter in duration, which quickens cashflow: - Net IRR for a CF is 23.9% compared to 19.3% for a Legacy Fund. - Net Investment Multiple is in a CF indexes lower (1.59 vs. 2.00) Increase your odds when you increase your bet. #pe #privateequity Source credit to: National Bureau of Economic Research

Private Equity could learn a few things from Punk rock's infamous "mosh pit." From the outside, they look like violent chaos. But from the inside, the pit is a self-regulated space for honest expression. It is a productive conversation between listener and music; between listener and "the way things are." It is the challenge to the status quo. Great founders foster a mosh pit of liberated ambition. That is the value system that made for a great investment. Ironically, that very strength is immediately viewed as a threat once purchased by PE. Founder is out, new hire is in. Everyone falls in line. In PE, more than 75% of new CEOs are external hires and 65% are complete outsiders. (Compared to 72% of CEOs in S&P 500 companies are internal promotions.)* Yet on average, that change isn't always the best idea. For example, the multiple on invested capital (MOIC) with the existing CEO outpaces the alternative. - avg. 2.85 MOIC = No CEO change - avg. 2.35 MOIC = External CEO change An investment in that troublemaker CEO includes the culture of fearless execution. That is the mosh pit only the very best companies have. Learn from the mosh pit. *Source: "The Market for CEOs: Evidence from Private Equity" (NBER, 2023)

Why do entrepreneurs-in-residence make sense in an environment like Nokia Bell Labs? Bell Labs is world-class at research. Deep expertise, long time horizons, and the ability to build things that didn’t exist before. That’s not the problem. When research is strong, the question often becomes: where does this actually live in the market? What problem does this solve? And for whom? Many research-driven initiatives start from a solution and then go looking for the right problem. That’s where the EiR role fits naturally! Entrepreneurs don’t come in to “optimize” research or translate it into slides. They come in to explore the market reality around it: to talk to potential customers, test assumptions, and understand where the technology actually creates value — or where it doesn’t. This creates a useful tension early on. Instead of asking how to push a technology forward, the question shifts to whether there is a business worth building at all, and what shape it could realistically take. Sometimes that leads to a new venture. Sometimes it leads to a pivot. And sometimes it leads to shelving an idea for later, or killing it altogether. All of those are valid outcomes. What matters is that the learning happens early, close to the market, and with people who are used to making decisions under uncertainty. That’s why the combination works: strong research on one side, entrepreneurial exploration on the other. Different strengths, solving different parts of the same problem. 🤝 If you’re interested in learning more about how Nokia Bell Labs works with Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, check the link to their EiR program in the comments. 👇 #NokiaBellLabs #EntrepreneurInResidence

In early client discovery, while scoping Haloo's search and watch technology, the first question lawyers asked us: "Will your search and watch integrate with my docketing system?" That question kept coming up. Again and again. It became a repetitive ask on the customer wish list. When we started seriously looking at docketing, we realized quickly: you can't build it for an AI-native practice on top of fragmented, unreliable third-party data - missing records, incorrect status, constant human verification to catch what the data had wrong. So we didn’t. Instead, a few members of our team spun out a dedicated data company Pinakel AI. Two years later, we now have exclusive coverage across >190 jurisdictions, built to match actual IPO records with the highest level of integrity. That foundation made it possible to finally build the docketing system we had originally imagined. 👇 Here’s an early look. Much more coming over the next couple of months! - HalooSince 15 May 2026
Anthropic recently released a Claude for Legal capability that includes trademark clearance functionality. Haloo tested it (we built the AI infrastructure specifically for instant comprehensive trademark clearance). Our takeaway: it tries to be transparent about its limitations, and the distinctiveness and common law are genuinely interesting, which is not surprising because web search and probabilistic language interpretation are areas where large models do well. But it is not performing trademark clearance in a way that lawyers could reliably use for legal decision-making today because it is not actually searching trademark registries in a meaningful or comprehensive way. It appears to rely primarily on legal and case law datasets such as CourtListener and Descrybe. Both are excellent legal research resources. Neither is a trademark registry. Any experienced trademark lawyer or in-house counsel will recognize that immediately. The concern is that a less experienced or lay user may not. Claude refers to the process as a “knockout search,” but it is not. That creates a real risk of users believing meaningful clearance has occurred when critical registry conflicts may never have been searched at all. One commenter suggested: “Just build MCP servers to connect LLMs to trademark registry data.” But from the perspective of people who have actually spent years building this infrastructure, that “gap” is the entire problem. Trademark clearance is fundamentally a computational retrieval and data infrastructure problem. In practice, a single trademark clearance search may require retrieving and evaluating hundreds of millions of trademark records across jurisdictions while applying deterministic logic around phonetics, conceptual similarity, coordinated classes, goods/services overlap, and likelihood-of-confusion standards. You cannot simply connect an LLM to trademark registry data and expect accurate trademark clearance. The model cannot reason across hundreds of millions of live records directly. The token requirements/ computational cost would be absurd, and the latency would make the system unusable in practice. Not to mention accuracy issues, and there’s a VERY high bar for accuracy in trademarks. Even today, during a live evaluation with a large global brand, we ran a side-by-side comparison between their traditional human analyst-prepared Clarivate report and Haloo’s computational deterministic retrieval engine with instant likelihood-of-confusion analysis layered on top. Haloo surfaced roughly 10–15 materially relevant USPTO references that were not included in the Clarivate report. In other words: 10–15 actual legal risks the human analyst missed. Even though Claude can't perform in this function, it's clear Anthropic believes trademarks are a meaningful AI category. So do we ;) #LegalTech #AInative #TrademarkLaw #ClaudeAI #AIInfrastructure #IP #Trademarkdata Pinakel AI

Anyone who knows me knows that bicycles are one of my great passions. One that grows even stronger when it connects with my other passions: physical activity, the outdoors, mechanics, technology, and patents. This year, it also connects to the memory of one very special person, to whom I dedicate these words. A friend, a fellow cycling enthusiast, and a visionary: the late Raz Malchi. The bicycle has come a long and revolutionary way since 1817, when it was invented by German Baron Karl von Drais, who called it the “running machine.” It looked more like a child’s balance bike, propelled by pushing one’s feet against the ground, with no pedals, no chain, and of course, no gears. Originally, designed as a human-powered alternative to horse-based transportation, it marked one of the earliest steps toward modern personal mobility. Today, bicycles are used across an enormous range of outdoor, and even indoor, activities, and their contribution to sustainability, as well as to physical, mental, and emotional well-being, is significant. In recent years, innovation in bicycle technology has advanced far beyond mechanical improvements. It now focuses on electrification, integrated power systems, advanced materials, digital connectivity, drivetrain and control systems, ergonomics, safety, and durability. Two interesting recent developments I came across are Škoda’s DUOBELL and SRAM’s integrated Motor-Gearbox Unit, or MGU. The first was created in response to a modern safety challenge: pedestrians and cyclists using noise-canceling headphones. DUOBELL uses a specific frequency range designed to penetrate the digital algorithms of noise cancellation, helping alert people on the road. The second may redefine the future of drivetrain systems in electric mountain bikes. The invention addresses two familiar challenges in modern e-MTBs: exposed and vulnerable rear derailleurs, and rapid chain wear. SRAM’s development moves the gear system into the motor housing of the bicycle, offering a solution to both issues (US Patent App. 2025388290). The Israeli angle, which is especially close to my heart, is connected to two important and highly deserving innovations by the late Raz Malchi, a true pioneer in the Israeli cycling community, known to many as the driving force behind Twenty Peaks™ The first is an innovative bicycle gear system designed to improve efficiency and durability for serious climbers and off-road riders (U.S. Patent No. 12,054,222). The second transforms a bicycle trainer into a compact, multifunctional training platform by connecting a pull-rope mechanism to the trainer’s resistance unit. This enables both rowing and resistance-based pulling exercises, combining cycling technology, strength training, and smart use of space (WO2026/069309). There is no more fitting occasion than World Bicycle Day to honor Raz’s contribution to the field he loved so deeply, and to celebrate the technology that continues to move us forward. #WorldBicycleDay
