Not choosing is a decision, too. That was my answer to the opening question of Thursday's CEO panel at the Global Photonics Economic Forum in Málaga: which decision did you make this year that you wouldn't have made two years ago? Two years ago, I would have thought I had to choose between this panel and my family. This year, I brought my one-year-old daughter to Málaga and did both. I don't usually get nervous before panels. This time I did. Eight CEOs on one stage, some of the biggest names in our industry and 45 minutes on the next five years of photonics. The broader economy isn't exactly booming right now. Photonics, however, feels like a different story. On that stage, everyone was talking about growth, scaling and how fast we can get from the lab to volume production. At Finetech, we hear that question every day. We build high-precision micro-assembly equipment, and we supply many of the companies on that stage. Some of our customers were sitting right there in the room. Almost every conversation we have right now starts with: "Are you ready to scale with us?" My answer: of course. But scaling only works if we plan it together. What is already giving me grey hair is that I’m having a lot of conversations about scaling right now, but seeing very few firm commitments. If everyone waits and then wants to ramp up at the same time, at short notice, that is exactly how bottlenecks are created. We need to know early what our customers will need, when and in what volume, so we can have the machines ready when production ramps up. The bottleneck doesn’t start on the shop floor. It starts months earlier, in the planning. Then came an interesting twist. Stefan Traeger, who moderated the panel, asked whether growth this fast needs a different kind of leadership and different skills and he put that question to me. Probably because my setup is a bit unusual: I come from a family business and all four of us siblings run a company of our own. We are all fairly young, and we talk constantly. We compare notes, challenge each other and share what works. That exchange is a big part of how we lead. Which brings me back to not choosing. We don't choose between the AI fast track and the rest of photonics either. AI is additional business, not a replacement, and the automation we develop under that pressure makes our machines better for industrial, medical, sensing and quantum customers as well. The next generation of photonics already works in the lab. Now we have to build the capacity to produce it at scale. So my ask is simple: share your roadmap, your timing and your commitments with us. And share them early. The earlier we know where you’re heading, the better we can prepare and make sure the machines are ready when the ramp is. Scaling works when we plan it together. Thank you to Optica, Stefan and my fellow panelists. What a group to share a stage with. A pretty good room to be nervous in. And a pretty good pink suit to be nervous in, too.

Protection only works if people can wear it while doing their job. At Hansen Protection, we developed ØY-Vind with Torbjørn for people who work in and around cold water. The brief was simple but demanding: help protect them without getting in the way of their work. Torbjørn put that idea to the test. He swam 6 km in water close to 3°C, cycled 180 km across Hardangervidda, and continued to Gaustatoppen in winter conditions. But this was never just a test of a suit. ØY-Vind carries the name of his brother, Per-Øyvind. Torbjørn’s determination to turn a personal loss into something that might help others come home safely is what stays with us. This is the work we believe in: listening to the people who face the risk, understanding the reality of their work, and designing protection they can rely on. 9 years ago Jeremy and I quit our engineering jobs to build the tools we wish we had to make it faster to build the products the world needs. For the first 8 years we were laser focused on a single bottleneck: design reviews. Today, our vision remains the same, but the breadth of our solution and our timelines are magnitudes more ambitious. There hasn't been a technology paradigm shift in engineering in 3+ decades. AI is changing that. But the answer doesn't lie in generative CAD alone. At the end of the day, it's about faster programs via faster (robust) decisions. So today at DES26, we revealed a complete vision (and some new products) to 200 of the top engineering leaders in the world. Engineering review and engineering knowledge were always two pillars of our strategy. Now we have a third to round it out: generative engineering. An AI harness that takes your organization’s collective knowledge and uses it to shape AI generated designs and artifacts - from CAD to documents to analysis frameworks to simulations. CoLab's customers design complex products that are manufactured at scale. We're building the platform that allows those organizations to take designs from concept to product in days, not years. The folks at DES26 got the full scoop today. We're releasing a small teaser here publicly (linked in the comments). With much more to come publicly throughout the final innings of 2026. For the boldest engineering leaders who want to be at the frontier of what's possible - let's talk and get you working with our team today. DM me. 🤝 9 years ago, we never would have envisioned this being possible. Today it feels inevitable. Time to build - LFG! 🤘

A few weeks ago, I wrote that packaging is one of the hidden heroes of battery technology. The reaction I get most often when talking about pouch cell laminates is a puzzled look. I remember proudly showing one of the first test laminates from our development work to a friend. She looked at it, laughed, and asked: "So... why exactly are you so excited about this piece of aluminum foil?" Fair question. Sometimes pouch cell laminates are jokingly referred to as "tea bags for batteries". From the outside, they don't look particularly impressive. Compared to discussions about lithium, silicon, solid-state batteries, or fast charging, battery packaging rarely gets much attention. Yet an enormous amount of engineering goes into it. A typical laminate combines polymer layers such as PET or nylon, an aluminum foil barrier, adhesive systems, and an inner sealing layer, often based on polypropylene. Each material serves a different purpose. One provides mechanical robustness, another acts as a barrier against moisture and gases, another creates the seal, while the adhesive system keeps very different materials working together throughout the battery's life. Every layer has its own community of experts behind it. Film producers, adhesive specialists, foil manufacturers, polymer suppliers, and battery engineers all approach the laminate from different perspectives. Yet customers never evaluate those layers separately. The only thing that matters is whether the laminate works as intended. That is what makes battery packaging such an interesting engineering challenge. Success is not determined by an individual material, but by how all layers perform together under years of mechanical stress, temperature fluctuations, electrolyte exposure, charging cycles, and manufacturing demands. The challenge becomes even greater because the laminate is designed not only for the battery itself, but also for the way that battery is manufactured. Processing conditions, equipment, and manufacturing requirements can all influence what the optimal solution looks like. This is why one-size-fits-all approaches rarely work. What makes sense for one cell design or production process may not make sense for another. A thinner structure may maximize the amount of active material within the cell, while a thicker one may offer advantages in mechanical robustness or long-term reliability. One manufacturer may prioritize lower sealing temperatures; another may focus on deep-drawing performance, process robustness, or cycle life. Ultimately, the goal is not to find a universal solution. It is to find the right balance between performance, manufacturability, lifetime, weight, cost, and reliability for a specific application. In the end, the question is not whether a laminate is good or bad. The question is whether it is the right fit for the purpose it is designed to serve. One takeaway from the BioNTX iC³ Life Science & Healthcare Innovation Summit was clear: the momentum behind life sciences in Texas is growing, and so is the focus on what it will take to turn that growth into long-term manufacturing opportunities. One of the most valuable discussions I attended explored "What's next for Texas in the 90th Legislature." The conversation reinforced the state’s interest in growing the market and its potential to create more manufacturing jobs across Texas. That growth will require more than innovation alone. Several discussions throughout the summit focused on investment and how life sciences customers can optimize capital as they grow. As companies move toward commercialization and greater scale, those decisions become increasingly connected to how they plan for the facilities and operations that will support their next stage. Gray understands the importance of bringing those considerations together early. Our integrated capabilities help customers consider how facilities, processes, and operations can evolve together to support both current needs and future growth. For life sciences leaders planning what comes next, the takeaway is simple: capital planning and facility planning should be part of the growth conversation from the beginning.

Commercial vehicle safety requires a human centric approach based on real world data. Trucks, buses, construction equipment, agricultural machines, and material handling vehicles serve different purposes in our value chain. Their drivers, operators and passengers face different seating positions, work patterns, and risk scenarios. At Autoliv’s Commercial Vehicle Tech Days, we showed how research could connect real-world safety data, physical testing, virtual simulation, and injury risk assessment using human body models. These capabilities helpe us explore a wider range of occupants and situations earlier in the development process, when engineering decisions have the greatest impact. The goal is to give engineers stronger evidence, more relevant scenarios, and better tools for making informed safety decisions. This research perspective supports a larger shift. Crash avoidance remains essential, but people still need protection when prevention reaches its limits. By studying the complete safety journey, we can help develop systems that protect occupants before, during, and after an incident. That is how research creates practical value: it turns real-world insight into clearer decisions and more human-centered protection. I look forward to continuing this dialogue with researchers, manufacturers, and safety partners. https://lnkd.in/dFuAie3u #SafetyResearch #CommercialVehicleSafety #SavingMoreLives

How often do you come across Gas Compression Thermal Blankets in this condition? Seen worse? In a perfect world, thermal blankets are replaced before hot spots or gaps appear. Or, in this case, while there’s still something left to change. What most people don’t realise is that there is likely hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) hidden underneath what’s left of this blanket. Cr(VI) isn’t always visible, and without the right precautions and cumbersome PPE, crews can be exposed to Cr(VI) and the associated cancer risk. Don’t accept the risk. Eliminate it. There’s an easy solution. Unlike other thermal blankets, Aletek Thermal Blankets are Cr(VI)-safe and don’t create unsafe levels of Cr(VI), while still providing industry-leading fire mitigation. #GasCompression #CrVI #OilAndGas #WorkerSafety #ThermalBlankets #FireMitigation
