Dus daar liepen we. Mensen komen letterlijk in beweging.

Ask a foreign investor what worries them most about Germany. You might expect the answer to be taxes. It usually isn’t. What I hear much more often is one word: Over-regulation. And I understand why. Take the Heating Act. The rules have changed several times within a relatively short period. At the same time, CO₂ requirements are becoming more complex and demanding. For investors and businesses, this creates something that is often more damaging than a high tax rate: uncertainty. Nobody likes making a long-term investment when they don't know what the rules will look like in two or three years. But here is where I think Germany gets an unfair reputation. Because while the regulatory environment can be frustrating, the German tax system has a quality that foreign investors often underestimate: predictability. Tax authorities apply the rules. Courts review their decisions. And, yes, getting a final answer can sometimes take time. But there is a process. There are rules. There is a legal framework. And, ultimately, there is a decision you can rely on. That may sound boring. It isn't. For an investor putting millions into a country, knowing where you stand can be worth far more than a headline tax rate. In some countries, challenging a tax assessment can turn into a battle that drags on for years, with no clear end in sight. Germany can be slow. Germany can be bureaucratic. Germany can certainly be over-regulated. But when it comes to taxation, that same system can provide something investors desperately need: certainty. So perhaps we should stop asking whether Germany is a high-tax country. The more interesting question is whether Germany is a predictable country to invest in. My answer is: When it comes to tax, surprisingly often, yes. The real challenge is navigating the regulatory environment. And that is precisely where the right structure — and the right advisor — can make all the difference.

One of the best indicators that you’re ready to automate a process? You can explain it clearly. Step-by-step. If you can’t articulate the process, then it isn't ready for automation. It is something you can overcome, though! Pull in your team. Map it out. Use a whiteboard, Lucid Software, or Miro . Automation only works when a clear process comes first. An AI agent can’t fix a broken workflow. If your process isn’t clearly mapped, defined, or consistent, the agent will just mirror the chaos. The real work is designing how your business executes. That’s your secret sauce, your differentiator. Agents can eliminate repetitive tasks, but they can’t replace your responsibility to think strategically about how the work gets done. Don’t skip that part. It’s where your value lives. Micah Johnson and I talk through why this matters on our Automate Your Agency episode: Find out what AI and Agents can’t fix! If aborted metering jobs are increasing, process change alone won’t solve it. Real improvement usually comes from the people leading your field teams every day. When frontline leaders have the right skills, tools, and confidence, the impact is clear: ⬆️ More jobs completed first time ⬆️ More appointments attended ⬆️ Higher customer satisfaction KPI issues are often treated as operational problems, but the real gap is usually leadership capability. Strong field leaders set clear expectations, hold consistent standards, and build accountability across teams and partners. Our recent article explores practical ways to assess and develop field leaders, and how to build a ‘one team’ culture across blended workforces. Getting called a “boomer” over a ROPA was not on my bingo card this week. But honestly… Marianne had a point. 😅 The old way of managing a ROPA is basically: Excel sheets, endless tabs, manual updates, version chaos, chasing business teams, rewriting the same things over and over again. And that’s just to maintain it. The crazy part is that most compliance work today is still work around the work: Updating fields. Copying information. Keeping records alive. Fixing outdated entries after something has already changed months ago. So we asked ourselves: What if AI just did all of that for you? Drop in an old Excel ROPA. AI agents enrich it. Vendors get recognised. Processes get linked. Fields update dynamically. Missing information gets surfaced. Tasks get triggered. Everything starts moving in minutes instead of weeks. Not because compliance professionals should do less thinking. But because I think they should spend less time maintaining systems and more time applying expertise. That’s the shift AI creates when it’s built specifically for Data Protection. (And yes… apparently knowing Excel shortcuts now qualifies you as a boomer.)

I'm a Privacy Officer. And occasionallyI used to procrastinate on my own work. DPIAs. Vendor reviews. Compliance tasks I knew inside out. It wasn't about difficulty. I just... sometimes didn't want to start. Some days I'd find every reason not to open the file. I've been sitting with that for a while... You're supposed to love what you do, right? What I've realised is that I do love the work. I just sometimes didn’t want to start. That's changed now. I work differently, in a way that actually fits how my brain operates. And now… I find myself wanting to get started 😍

End-of-year audit, in 7 steps: 1. Ask for the final trial balance. 2. Get told “it’s in the email.” 3. Find 12 email threads. 4. None have the final trial balance. 5. Receive a USB stick in the mail. 6. The final trial balance is in PDF instead of XLS. 7. Call the client at 8pm the night before the deadline. Exaggerated? A bit. Yet, we hear versions of this all the time from teams before they switch to Auditi. Lost files. Endless back-and-forth. Messy shared drives. Hey auditors.... the good news is, AuditBot is really good. The bad news it, you may not be using it yet. Not only does it more than half the time taken on transaction testing, it also: ✅ Boosts workflow efficiency ✅ Helps eliminate bias ✅ Standardises outputs with automated working papers ✅ Gives guardrails to less experienced staff. In addition, saving chargeable time allows time to be applied elsewhere to generate further revenue and help your audit firm grow. Oh, and the bigger the sample, the more extraordinary the results. Recent advances in AI are creating new opportunities to help compliance teams work more efficiently by accelerating some of the most time-intensive aspects of an investigation, from information gathering and research to case documentation. Human analysts remain at the centre of every disposition decision, applying the expertise and judgment that effective compliance programs depend on. The result is greater capacity, stronger consistency, and more time focused on high-value investigative work. Having spent my career helping financial institutions navigate complex financial crime challenges, I believe AI represents one of the most significant opportunities we've seen to enhance the effectiveness of compliance programs while preserving human oversight. In this short video introducing 𝗔𝗻𝗸𝘂𝗿𝗮 𝗔𝗜 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘁, I share my perspective on how AI is reshaping financial crime compliance and why I believe the institutions that thoughtfully combine technology with human expertise will be best positioned for the future. #AML #FinancialCrime #FinCrime #RegTech #FinancialServices #ArtificialIntelligence #TransactionMonitoring #Sanctions #Screening #AdverseMedia

If I were starting from scratch, here’s how I’d think about building financial leadership in a growing business. At first, you just need good bookkeeping. Then, you need accurate reporting and basic controls. Only then can you start leveraging deeper analysis and forward-looking strategy. The problem I see in SMB finance is twofold: CEOs wait too long to bring in true financial leadership. Controllers and accountants are expected to act like CFOs without the tools or training. Yet, everybody wants strategic insights—hiring models, cash runway, capital plans. So the finance team feels stretched and undervalued. The CEO fills the gap themselves, making million-dollar calls without the data to back them. And when things break, the blame lands on the finance staff, which is already stretched thin. I believe the solution is to bring in CFO support at the right time: When decisions are bigger than bookkeeping. When growth demands modeling, not just reporting. When you’re raising or deploying capital. That doesn’t always mean a full-time CFO. Fractional leaders can step in, elevate the finance function, and give CEOs the clarity they’ve been missing. Not sure what role to hire? Let’s talk. https://lnkd.in/gbabqp2t

So I put together a short starter version of my FDD checklist: 👉 If you are a buyer, it will help you know what to start asking for. 👉 If you are a seller, it will help you get organized before the questions even come.
