Kein Nebenbei-Event. Ein Format mit Substanz. Köln. Ask an employee what they actually use, and it is rarely the ping pong table. It is the benefit that lands in their pocket every month 💪 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲. The market is worth more than $77 billion a year in Europe alone, part of a $232 billion global market And it is nowhere near saturated. → 102.6M employees across the five largest EU schemes are eligible for tax-free benefits. → In Germany alone, 42.3M people qualify for the €50 per month tax-free Sachbezug. → Only about half of employers actually use it every month. So this is not a demand problem. Employees want money that stretches further, especially against rising prices. That €600 a year of tax-free purchasing power matters more now than it did five years ago. The friction is....every market runs its own scheme. A Sachbezug in Germany, a titre-restaurant in France, an ecochèque in Belgium. Same idea, a different rulebook in each country, and real admin to run it properly. That is where the 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 is hiding. What we are doing at finperks is allowing HR SaaS platforms to offer tax-free rewards (often prepaid/gift cards) natively in their platform. Employees claim the benefit in the tool they already open every month, with no separate app and no extra login. The compliance runs in the background, scheme by scheme, so the platform never carries the legal or admin load. And rather than paying a standalone provider on top of the gift card margin, the platform earns that margin itself 🙂 Where do you think the biggest unlock is, on the employer side, the employee side, or in the infrastructure?

Physical gift cards cost to print before freight, rack fees, and restocking hit the total 🙋♂️ Digital marginal cost per additional issuance: near zero. 0️⃣ That is not the interesting part. Here is why digital gift card distribution wins on structural dimensions: → Server-side activation kills fraud at the root. Fraudsters targeting physical cards exploit one vulnerability: exposed PIN codes sitting on retail racks. Server-side activation means the code does not exist until the moment of purchase. → Apple Wallet integration turns a gift card into a payment rail. A stored-value instrument that lives on the home screen and auto-refreshes its balance is not a gift card anymore. It is a tap-to-pay instrument the brand controls directly. → A supermarket rack holds 40 to 50 brands for every customer. A fintech shelf powered by transaction data surfaces hundreds, and shows the 3 relevant to your actual spending behaviour. → 50,700 tonnes of PVC from physical gift cards go into landfill every year. Every CFO with a net-zero target still has a gift card programme built on plastic. → Digital gift cards surpassed physical in 2024. They now represent 57% of all gift card sales and are growing at 23% annually. Brands still optimising for the rack are running the wrong race. What are your thoughts? I've been in rooms with a lot of founders over the past few years. Different industries. Different stages. Different backgrounds. The ones who build something that lasts share something I didn't expect when I first started paying attention to it. They're not the most confident people in the room. They're the most curious. They obsess over the problem. Not the product, not the company, not the fundraise. The problem. What's broken, why it's broken, why everyone else has got it slightly wrong. They're also comfortable sitting with uncertainty longer than most people. Building something new means living with questions that don't have answers yet. The founders who need certainty too early make decisions too early, and usually the wrong ones. Last thing: the clearest founders know exactly what they're not building. Sometimes they have more conviction about what they're saying no to than what they're saying yes to. That's what keeps a company focused when every opportunity looks interesting. Skills matter. Experience matters. But I've seen highly skilled people build nothing of value, and people with no obvious advantages build things that change industries. The difference is almost never what's on paper.

Crypto consumer finance is already full of apps that launched and quietly disappeared. Most of them last just a few months. Their problem isn’t bad timing or bad technology either. Their problem is that they launch without a genuine reason to exist. They launch maybe with a slightly better UX, or 1% more cashback, which is maybe enough to raise a round, but not enough to last. If your only answer to "Why you?" is "We offer 1% more cashback" you've already lost. You'll win until someone offers 2%. The apps that survive won't be the ones that launch first or spend the most on incentives, but the ones with a clear answer to who they're building for and why nobody else is solving that problem for them. Don't launch another crypto finance app. Build something people couldn't use before you existed. I wrote about this topic in my latest Forbes article: https://lnkd.in/g9f5QUVf

If you’re a Cal Founder (or want to be), there are less than 2 weeks left to apply for Cal Build! We’re currently recruiting for our final cohort of the year for Cal Build, Foundation Capital’s early-stage, free accelerator for Berkeley founders. The data says it all — Cal ranks #1 globally in both companies founded and total founder count (PitchBook 2024), ahead of Stanford, Harvard, and MIT. But here’s the catch: despite producing more founders, Cal startups raise significantly less capital. That gap isn’t about talent, it’s about access. Cal Build is built to be your first believer. So far, we’ve supported 50+ Cal founders at the earliest stage of their journey, helping them go from idea to launch with hands-on support from Foundation Capital partners, free office space in SF, over $500K in startup credits, and a tight-knit community of founders building alongside you. Apply by October 22nd - interviews are already underway: https://lnkd.in/g5qaYDQr

Usually when I rediscover something I created years ago, I reach for my red pen. What did I get wrong? Does it still hold up? How would I make it better today? I had the opposite reaction when I found this slide from our 2016 annual meeting, titled "Deep Thoughts on Deep Learning.” My speaker notes start with a prediction: "There won't be a single AI company." Instead, I argued, AI would be woven into the fabric of everything - how we interact with computers, diagnose diseases, secure networks, decide what to buy, and much more. My sketch depicts AI as a foundational layer underpinning every part of our economy. This belief in AI’s exponential potential led to our early investments in companies like Cerebras Systems, which reimagined computing for AI’s scale; Seel, which makes returns as predictable as the online purchases fueling e-commerce; and Loft Orbital, whose space-infrastructure-as-a-service model model allows AI applications to run directly in orbit. More than a prediction about the future, this slide expresses a belief I’ve long held: extraordinary founders don’t search for markets - they manifest them. Our strategy is to go early, go deep, and find these founders who are building the categories they’ll ultimately dominate.

This is Mark Mountford, fractional CFO (The CFO Centre UK ), describing his life before he discovered Float Cash Flow Forecasting. His problem? The same one many fCFOs face: Clients hire you for strategic guidance. But you're stuck building spreadsheets instead. Mark's typical clients are SMEs (£3m - £20m turnover) who've hit a plateau. They know the basics: invoicing, payments, bookkeeping. What they don't know? Where their cash will be next week, next month, or whether they can afford that equipment purchase. Before Float, Mark spent 6-12 months on each engagement. Most of it doing prep work, not strategy. Now? Three months. One day of setup, then straight to the work that matters. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: transaction-level cash flow forecasting that updates automatically from Xero or QuickBooks. No formulae. No data wrestling. Mark can finally do what his clients value him for the most. Here's what Andy Mellor means ↓ Most fractional CFOs only think about systems as operational fixes. Faster month-end close. Better cash visibility. Cleaner reports. Andy sees it differently: Good systems add real value to the exit price. It could be worth an extra one times multiple when the founder sells. That's not about improving margins or cutting costs. That's about what the business is actually worth when it's time to sell. The shift: Manual processes = operational cost today Modern systems = exit value tomorrow Your job isn't just making the business run better. It's making the business worth more. Digital transformation in lending promised progress, but it mostly produced fragmentation. Each new lending system brought its own logic, its own data, its own way of working. Over time, the space between those systems grew wider, filled with uncertainty, duplicated records, and policies that drifted from their design. When that gap kept widening, we started asking a simple question: what would lending look like if the system itself never fell out of sync? That question became a systems design pursuit….a way to bring all layers of lending back into alignment. The answer was a unified logic we call Lending Intelligence, an architecture built to move data, policy, and process as one. When the foundation holds steady, everything built on it stays consistent, from compliance to customer experience. Finspectra grew from this idea. We wanted a system where trust lives inside the architecture itself. Where every workflow, every rule, and every update reflects that principle. Prizm, finspectra’s native lending suite, became that framework — a connected environment that carries the lender’s intent from origination through collections without losing coherence. That principle shows up in how it’s built. 1) A unified data model keeps every record and rule aligned, extending that same view to borrowers through self-service portals. 2) Enterprise-grade security keeps access structured, so clarity and control move together. 3) Auditable design keeps every decision visible, so trust becomes part of daily work, not a separate task. In lending, reliability comes from alignment when every layer of the system agrees on what is true. That’s the kind of architecture we’ve been engineering from day one.

I went to sell tickets on Ticketmaster the other day, and I was surprised to see they still require users to manually enter their bank account information. Asking people to track down transit, routing, and account numbers creates unnecessary friction. It slows the process down, pulls users out of the flow, and often forces them to leave the experience entirely to sign into their online banking or search the house for a cheque. From a user-experience standpoint, it feels outdated. Smooth financial experiences shouldn’t require users to jump through hoops. And because I’m always thinking about how these things could be better… Ticketmaster, I designed what an updated flow might look like for you...

New Advisor Poll on Financial and Investment Literacy This Financial Literacy Month, Fidelity Canada participated in the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada | Agence de la consommation en matière financière du Canada #TalkMoney initiative. Of many things we did this month, I wanted to share with everyone just one recent poll we commissioned with the financial advisor community. With Education | Éducation under Minister Paul Calandra's leadership expected to roll out a financial literacy graduation requirement for high school students next year, we asked 2,400 financial advisors who joined a FidelityConnects daily webcast whether this should be NATIONAL. The result? Overwhelming support. 75% of financial advisors said they strongly support the idea of a national graduation requirement for high school students across Canada. When combined with an additional 17% of financial advisors saying they support this in Ontario, the support for more financial literacy education is 92% among financial advisors! This is an extremely high level of support and it makes a lot of sense. Right alongside our educators, financial advisors add tremendous value to Canadians. They teach Canadians about money, how to invest properly and how to achieve their goals. And they want to give the gift of financial literacy, and specifically investment literacy, so high school students can be empowered earlier in their journey to make the most out of their money and their lives. As we wrap up Financial Literacy Month and think about how to improve investment literacy for everyone, I’d like to thank the Ontario government for leading the way and financial advisors and educators for making a difference by investing in our future through education.
