After nearly a decade leading finance teams across various sectors, and after a few transformative years as Finance Director for Plus Dane Housing, as I mentioned on Friday I’ll be stepping away in March 2026 to start a new chapter. From April, I’ll be working on a fractional basis with scaling organisations that want more from their finance function; sharper insight, better decisions, and clarity from complexity. I’ve shared a link below to a podcast I listened to recently that I think described what I want to do really well. If you have a spare 30 mins in the car or on a run, it’s worth a listen (thank you Colin Hewitt and Elliott Gaspar). I’ve seen first-hand how powerful finance can be when it shifts from reporting the past to shaping the future. That’s what I’ll be helping businesses to do: - Turn numbers into narratives - Build confidence in decisions - Create finance teams that drive performance, not just monitor it I’ll share more in the coming months as I build this new venture, but for now, I’m excited to take everything I’ve learned about clarity, culture, and commercial storytelling into a space where it can make a difference for more businesses. If you’re interested in how fractional finance leadership can bring fresh perspective and focus without the full-time overhead, I’d love to connect. https://lnkd.in/eprP6Vr6

WFT does a fractional #FinanceDirector have to do with John Wayne? I was on a pod with top FDs, Elliott Gaspar, Stacey Borrow and Ramzi Al-Masri talking about ... 'How to save a business in 13 weeks' Whilst we talked about the merits of different forecasts for different purposes (a daily forecast vs. a weekly forecast vs. a monthly vs. an investment plan), the following was SUPER clear to me ... 👉🏻 a fractional FD is the go to person for a business owner with a cash pinch. A business owner needs to see and believe they can get through a cash pinch. A friction-free app like Float Cash Flow Forecasting is designed to do this. 👉🏻 a fractional FD will go short term on cash forecast (daily, weekly) in order to get through the cash pinch (or indeed save / shore up a business). It is so much easier to build a longer term forecast when there isn't an immediate cash pinch or worse. 👉🏻 it was a pleasure to be on a call with other portfolio FDs who have a portfolio because they live and breathe the John Wayne quote (in the vid) PS. My other favourite John Wayne quote was "Get off your horse and drink your milk!", with the deep accent, something my three daughters used to here a lot at breakfast when they were much younger. PPS. The Question That Divided over 100 Finance Professionals If you could only do one type of cash flow forecast for the rest of your career - short-term (13 weeks) or long-range (12-24 months) - which would you choose? 90% said long-range according to a poll by Fractional Finance Forum But in this CFO Huddle episode, we admitted something uncomfortable: while we prefer strategic planning, the 13-week forecast is what actually saves businesses. With Elliott Gaspar, Stacey Borrow and Ciaran O'Donnell, we tackled the forecasting choices that make or break your impact as a fractional CFO. What we explored: → Why you can be loss-making many times, but only run out of cash once → The red flags hiding in forecasts that look perfectly fine → How to maintain accuracy when you're only with clients a few days a month → The £1.2M VAT bill that nobody saw coming One principle stood out: cash flow forecasting isn't about perfect prediction. It's about seeing problems early enough to solve them. Watch "13 Weeks to Save a Business" - join the Cash Flow Intelligence Hub (powered by Float Cash Flow Forecasting) - link in the comments. Andy Mellor told us this when we asked why he chose Float Cash Flow Forecasting. He worked as a board-level CFO for 15 years before founding Summit 17. He's seen every tool out there. When his previous platform shut down, he could have chosen tools that do "everything" - accounting, reporting, analytics, forecasting. Instead, he chose Float where cash flow really is our bread and butter. 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 ↓ ∙30 minutes setup, client-ready forecast immediately ∙Half the weekly time vs. Excel (30 mins vs. 2 hours) ∙Accurate, automated, up-to-date data ∙No feature bloat or complexity Andy's even said, "𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘴𝘯'𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦." Coming from someone who's been a board-level CFO for 15 years, that means something. So, thank you, Andy! What a testimonial! If you're a fractional CFO still wrestling with spreadsheets, his story might be worth paying attention to. Here's what Andy Mellor means ↓ Most fractional CFOs only think about systems as operational fixes. Faster month-end close. Better cash visibility. Cleaner reports. Andy sees it differently: Good systems add real value to the exit price. It could be worth an extra one times multiple when the founder sells. That's not about improving margins or cutting costs. That's about what the business is actually worth when it's time to sell. The shift: Manual processes = operational cost today Modern systems = exit value tomorrow Your job isn't just making the business run better. It's making the business worth more. This came from Episode 1 of The CFO Huddle with Andy Mellor, 📈 Barry Hynd, Karen Stephen, Nina Bernardin and Lauren Elizabeth Pearl. Top finance minds sharing real experiences and worthy lessons. 👉 Episode 2 is coming soon. "𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘌𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘭... 𝘮𝘺 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨." This is Mark Mountford, fractional CFO (The CFO Centre UK ), describing his life before he discovered Float Cash Flow Forecasting. His problem? The same one many fCFOs face: Clients hire you for strategic guidance. But you're stuck building spreadsheets instead. Mark's typical clients are SMEs (£3m - £20m turnover) who've hit a plateau. They know the basics: invoicing, payments, bookkeeping. What they don't know? Where their cash will be next week, next month, or whether they can afford that equipment purchase. Before Float, Mark spent 6-12 months on each engagement. Most of it doing prep work, not strategy. Now? Three months. One day of setup, then straight to the work that matters. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: transaction-level cash flow forecasting that updates automatically from Xero or QuickBooks. No formulae. No data wrestling. Mark can finally do what his clients value him for the most.
