𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬. Over the years I have asked Europeans in their forties one question: what do you wish you had done in your thirties? The answers, from Antwerp to Gothenburg, were uncomfortably consistent. Seven regrets. All avoidable. Six still fixable. The full list, two minutes to read: https://lnkd.in/gHrwCkw9

When you choose business software, you are also choosing who will hold the memory of your business. Your customer relationships. The rates you negotiated. The shipments you moved. The margins you earned. Even the mistakes you learned from. Today, AI and vibe coding can turn an idea into a polished application within days. I see that as progress. But it has also made a good-looking screen easier to mistake for a dependable business system. The serious questions usually sit behind the demo. Where will the data live? Who can access it? Will it be used to train an AI model? Is each customer’s data kept separate? Can it be recovered after a failure? Can the customer take it back if the software company disappears? These are not minor technical details. They are business decisions carrying long-term risk. In more than 30 years of building freight technology, I have seen products come and go. The business data remains. When that data is leaked, lost or locked inside a system, the damage goes far beyond technology. AI will continue to change how quickly software can be built. That is good. It must not change the duty of those trusted with customer data. A software company does more than provide a product. It becomes the custodian of its customers’ business memory.

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗲𝘀. Football celebrates stars. Messi. Ronaldo. Mbappé. Players who can change a match in one moment. But Spain did not win the World Cup because it had the biggest star. It won because every player trusted the same system. Everyone knew where to move, when to pass and what the team expected from them. Individual skill remained important, but it worked inside one shared method. The same holds true in business. A great salesperson can win a major customer. An experienced operations person can rescue a difficult shipment. A strong finance head can keep control when things get tight. But a company cannot depend on people repeatedly saving the day. Real strength comes when sales, operations, customs, transport, warehousing and finance work with the same information, follow connected processes and move towards one goal. People create excellence. A common system makes that excellence repeatable. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺.
