We’re two-plus years into AI Search dismantling what we thought we knew about organic search strategy, search behavior, and the customer journey. I spent the last three months on discovery calls, and every company had a different context: • resources • teams involved • stages of planning and execution • content foundations • levels of leadership pressure • opinions on what the channel is worth Everyone is trying to figure out how to build a mature AI Search program without setting themselves up to fail six months from now. You can’t afford to ignore it, and you need to procure budget. ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Claude change the value prop constantly. The value is hard to define. Y'all got different opinions. The measurement is messy because a lot of OG analytics aren't configured correctly in the first place. And ownership is unclear. Who is taking this on? Ignoring it is still a choice, and that choice has consequences. AI Search looks different depending on your role, business model, and org maturity. Leading SEO for an ecommerce company? You have to answer the awkward internal question of who owns what. Your SEO team can’t fix weak product data alone, your content team isn't working on the product feed, and your leadership team needs to understand why AI visibility may depend on merchandising, lifecycle, PR, dev, customer experience, and the entire brand footprint. SEO lead inside a newsroom? Completely different problems. You’re thinking about site structure, templates, author pages, follow buttons, crawlability. Then you have to explain the AI Search implications to devs without making it sound like another random SEO ticket. You have to talk to editors and journalists in a way that doesn’t make AI feel like a stain on editorial judgment. If you’re on a lean marketing team (hi, it's me most of my career), the question is more blunt: how the hell do you prioritize this when you can’t do it all? You still have content, website dev, SEO, email, paid, webinars, and reporting on your plate: What do we think will move visibility? What can we test in 30–60 days? What is big enough to matter, but small enough to ship? CMO of a mid-market company? You're deciding whether to hand the whole thing to SEO since you don’t have budget for a dedicated AI Search role. Maybe that works for now. Maybe that becomes the argument for budget. A responsible AI Search program needs ownership, resourcing, internal education, agreed-upon metrics, and a clear view of how the work connects to short-term and long-term revenue. There isn’t one AI Search playbook. We wrote a manual, but no manual knows the exact context, constraints, politics, and maturity level inside your business. Want to make progress? Stop treating AI Search like a side project for SEO. Treat it like a cross-functional visibility problem. I’m not saying your business should be in the middle of an existential crisis, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it feels that way.

Realtors: the families you want to reach are at the grocery store this week. Cart ads put your face in front of 3,000 of them a day. Get $100 off your first campaign. Your future clients shop 2-3 times a week, every week, at the same store down the street from the homes you sell. A cart ad means they see your name on every trip. Not a scroll-past impression, a physical presence in their routine. By the time they're ready to buy or sell, you're already the realtor they know.

I get a lot of q's about building multi-exec LinkedIn strategies. I always point to this great 3 vector chart as a starting point. Basically, when you go to select your executives, try to strategically place them within this space based on your goals. ➡️ Vector 1 - Buying committee Each major role in the buying committee has different priorities, challenges, and levels of responsibility. Your executive lineup should represent those differences. Match executives to the audience at roughly the same level: - CEOs speak to CEOs. - VPs speak to VPs. - Managers speak to managers. Peer alignment matters because people tend to trust and identify with others who operate at a similar altitude. The content should also reflect whether the audience is tactical or strategic. Managers may get more value from practical playbooks and execution guidance. Senior executives are more likely to engage with strategic points of view, market shifts, and business implications. When you cannot cover the entire buying committee, group roles with similar identities and needs. VPs may identify more closely with the C-suite than managers do, while managers may share similar tactical concerns across functions. ➡️ Vector 2 - Customer segment Different executives can own different customer segments, especially when the product creates distinct value for each one. This is commonly divided by: - Industry - Company size - Geography - Use case - Customer maturity ➡️ Vector 3 - Inside vs outside the company Internal executives provide company expertise, operating experience, and direct credibility. External participants can include customers, partners, advisors, investors, industry experts, and other influential voices. These people can expand the range and credibility of the program without requiring every point of view to come directly from the company. Once these three vectors are mapped, each participant can be assigned a clear role within the strategy. Then each will plug into a single operating infrstructure that is owned by the markteing team. That includes: - Strategy - Content production - Paid amplification - ICP engagement tracking - Sales activation The system should connect into the broader marketing system as well as sales activation workflows if your company has them.

If I woke up as a VP of Comms, I'd immediately go all in on LinkedIn. Here are 5 semi-controversial things I'd do... (1) Build a list of ALL journalists, podcasts hosts, LinkedIn editorial staff, and non-competitive industry voices who are active on LinkedIn (2) Study what the people on that list post about and use it as the basis for an executive content strategy (entire bench of execs, not just our CEO) (3) Blitz the list with our executives through connections, messages, and comments. (4) Self publish press releases through our CEO's LinkedIn and run thought leader ads to push them to journalists, podcasts hosts, and industry voices. (5) Every time we get a placement, post about it, and run a thought leader ad to push that placement to everyone on our target account list. The future of comms is on LinkedIn. Comms leaders who want to meet the moment have no choice but to put something like the above into place. --- This is what we're rolling out for our clients at Influent Social. Interested in how? Send me a DM.
