My friend thinks HR is old ladies doing paperwork. Honestly, I cannot fully blame them. In my hotel management apprenticeship, I typed employee record sheets on a typewriter. So yes. I have done the paperwork. Literally on paper. Joke aside: Earlier this week I had just come out of a call with an HR leader who has spent decades in the rooms where people decisions get made in big organisations. I told my friend how energised I felt. They looked at me as if I had said I love doing my tax return. Here is what we actually talked about: → A leadership decision everyone knew was wrong, and a whole organisation that followed it anyway. Someone in HR has to be the person who says where the line is. → Lawyers who wanted to work around the works council during a merger. And the HR person who rebuilt that relationship instead, because employees are not an obstacle to a deal. → A senior leader who leaves overnight, and a team that still needs someone to hold it together on Monday. → Companies so large that every single relocation was reinvented from scratch. None of that is paperwork. All of it depends on the paperwork. HR works on three layers: → Administration: contracts and processes people can count on. → Service: helping managers and employees through what is happening right now. → Strategy: deciding what kind of organisation the company needs to become, and how its people grow with it. Many companies only fund the first one. Then they wonder why HR never gets to the third. I see it every week in international hiring. The visa is the paperwork. Whether a family can build a life in Germany is not. (That is usually where the budget runs out.) If HR still looks like old ladies doing paperwork from the outside, maybe that is all the time we ever left it. What would you tell my friend?

Every now and then I get asked: “So now with AI, do you see much churn from companies building their own version of your product?” It makes me irrationally angry. Not because I’m offended or because it's presuming something we don’t actually see at all in the numbers, but because the premise defies all basic logic. If AI enables your engineers to build a product you previously bought, what do you think the people building the product you're replacing are doing with the same technology? Writing code on scrolls and sending it by carrier pigeon? The speed increase available to you is available to them too. Except they’re spending 100% of their time on that problem, working through every permutation of problems you don't even know exist yet. So assuming equal (or slower) speed, what exactly are you gaining by building it yourself? Sometimes it's a false belief that "our use case is small". That belief typically has a short shelf life, because it assumes your needs are static (they are not). But usually, the answer is control over a handful of very specific things of outsized value. Nobody wakes up wanting to own email parsing, workflow routing, AI evals, reporting, permissions, or an on-call rota for yet another system. But those are the 95% you have to own if you want to control the final 5%. So what’s an AI-pilled company to do? Languishing on stale SaaS is not an option, but neither is building your own Zendesk over a weekend. Here’s my advice: 1. Do the math. Be very clear about the outcome you can only get by building yourself. The value of that outcome needs to comfortably exceed the engineering time and ongoing ownership you’re taking on. 2. Build the bit that’s well and truly yours. More software is becoming infrastructure: they give you the hard and boring stuff so you don't have to worry about it, with enough primitives on top for you to make it specific to your company (e.g. Plain already works this way), so just use software that works that way. 3. If you're going to buy, buy velocity. A vendor is not a static feature checklist. Pick teams whose rate of improvement you believe in. I’m extremely bullish on AI-pilling almost every line of code. I’m much less bullish on every company rebuilding every core system from scratch. The value and future for most companies is in owning the last mile, not building the whole road.

We know what you did last summer. And for how long. New in Ringtime: Deep Screening. Every screening hears them: “15 years.” “Quite a while.” “PLC.” “Maybe.” Answers that sound complete and tell you nothing. Deep Screening hears the gap and asks what a good recruiter would: Where was that? How long exactly? What did you do with it? How would you get there? Customers kept asking us for one thing: go deeper when an answer is vague. Now our agents do, on the questions that matter most. Before the screening ends. (More on the blog)

A debt collector may be the first organisation to recognise that someone’s financial difficulties are becoming structural. That insight comes with a responsibility to act. That is why we have invested in our Budget Coach program in the Netherlands. Through personal coaching and a warm handover, consumers receive practical support and when needed, active guidance towards professional debt assistance. The goal is simple: lower barriers, build trust and help people access support before financial challenges become unmanageable. This year alone, more than 300 consumers have received support from our Budget Coaches. A significant number were connected with professional debt counselling despite not having been identified through existing early-warning mechanisms. Early debt signalling is important. Real impact comes from turning insight into action. On 5 November at Credit Expo Nederland, Jan Terra, Maris Bosch and Froukje de Wit will share practical experiences on debt signalling, warm handovers and effective collaboration in a keynote and roundtable discussions.
