The petition, 400 metres long, was carried to Verde on Tuesday by several of the UK’s best-known animal protection groups. Less than 24 hours later, Animal Equality was on the same pavement, launching its own campaign aimed at Pret's use of Frankenchickens. It’s the third organisation, after Anima and Project Slingshot, to make Pret’s accountability one of its top priorities. What do businesses need to know about the EU Forced Labour Regulation? Here are the basics: Who? Economic operators of any size and from any sector that sell within, or export from, the EU. What? Products made with forced labour at any tier of production. When? The Regulation applies from 14 December 2027. Where? It covers products made inside as well as outside the EU. And how does it work? 1️⃣ When there is a suspicion that a product was made with forced labour, authorities can investigate. 2️⃣ Cases are prioritised according to the severity and scale of the suspected forced labour. Relevant economic operators may be required to provide relevant information within 60 days. 3️⃣ A decision should be reached within nine months. 4️⃣ If forced labour is confirmed, the decision applies immediately: (i) the product cannot be marketed in or exported from the EU, (ii) existing stocks must be disposed of, (iii) products that reach EU ports will be disposed of. So, what does this mean for your business right now? Preparation should not start when an investigation does. You do not need to have every answer today, but you can start understanding where forced labour risks may exist in your supply chain. Could your business respond if a forced labour concern were raised?
