Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union comes at an important moment for Europe's life sciences sector. With competitiveness, innovation and the Biotech Act high on the agenda, the next months offer a real opportunity to turn ambition into action. In my conversation with Euractiv, I discuss what this means in practice: building a European policy framework that encourages research and incentivizes investment in health innovation, and strengthening the conditions that allow therapeutic breakthrough to thrive across Member States. A predictable, innovation-friendly environment is essential for Europe’s leadership in life sciences and, above all, for patients and healthcare systems. I look forward to continuing the conversation over the coming months. #IrishPresidency #Competitiveness #BiotechAct #EUHealth

For those of us who have been in the biopharmaceutical industry for a long time, the experience of working on "me too" or "me better" drug discovery programs is commonplace, and the privilege of working on novel targets supported by powerful causal biology, such as osteoprotegrin, sclerostin and PCSK9, is quite quite rare. 38 targets now have more than 50 programs against each of them, while the number of novel targets advanced per year fell from roughly 100 in 2015 to about 30 in 2024. For 8 years insitro has been working to reverse this trend. Leveraging Platform Innovation to Tackle Tough Targets https://lnkd.in/eVU5xFCa Thursday, October 22nd, 2026 8 AM PT | 11 AM ET | 5 PM CET Drug discovery is increasingly focused on biological targets once considered undruggable. In this difficult-to-drug space, success depends on understanding how the target should be modulated, identifying molecules capable of delivering the desired mechanism, and rapidly establishing confidence in their activity. In this Flash Talk, Andrea Weston, Head of Discovery Biology and Pharmacology at Pfizer, will explore how the thoughtful integration of platform technologies can improve the probability of success against challenging targets. She will highlight how the right protein reagents and cellular models can be critical to successful lead identification, and how defining the desired mechanism of action before screening can better position programs for success. Andrea will also examine current hit-finding strategies and emerging approaches for elucidating small-molecule MoAs, sharing how these advances are collectively expanding the boundaries of druggability and creating new opportunities to discover transformative medicines. Register now to learn more about recent advances in platform technologies and their applications towards difficult-to-drug targets: https://lnkd.in/ejdut4Jg

In the latest issue of Cell, insitro founder and CEO Daphne Koller joins researchers from across the life sciences in sharing perspectives on how AI is transforming biomedical research — and what it will take to turn today's advances into deeper biological understanding. In her contribution, "Causal AI won't emerge on its own," Daphne argues that the challenge ahead is not scaling AI models, but generating the right data to teach them cause and effect in human biology. Gaining this insight depends on dual pillars of proof: naturally occurring randomized trials via genetic diversity within broad patient populations, alongside genome-scale perturbation experiments. Isolated, neither provides a complete picture. Combined, they empower our platform to bridge observation with biological cause, addressing the essential question in therapeutic development: what occurs when we intervene on this specific target? By producing this data at massive scale, insitro powers the Virtual Human™ – a genetically anchored AI engine that reveals how disease begins, progresses, and can be resolved; and our TherML™ platform, which designs medicines against the causal drivers it identifies. Every disease we interrogate makes the model smarter, compounding our lead as the corpus grows. "The goal was never a virtual cell. It is a causal model of a multi-scale human." 📖 Read the full essay in Cell: https://lnkd.in/gMetMntU 🔎 More from Daphne on causal AI in Deep Phenotype, insitro's official Substack publication: → “Drug Discovery Has No Magic Wands” - https://lnkd.in/dGK8DBeq → “Mapping Causal Human Biology” - https://lnkd.in/gkWwXQeW #AI #DrugDiscovery #CausalBiology
