I wouldn't want to be debugging iPaaS integrations today… Amazon went down at 3am this morning, and we couldn't even update our status page because the status page service runs on AWS. But when it started coming back up (and it’s coming back up slowly to say the least), all Unito integrations started syncing retroactively without human intervention and without missing an update. One of our large newsroom customers reached out this morning checking in, and everything had already recovered on its own while they slept.😅 Most integration platforms can't do that, and I'm guessing a ton of teams are scrambling to recover right now. Here's what probably happened: While one system was down, the other kept getting updated and sending webhooks to the integration. Those events were either dropped or buffered for a short amount of time. Most integration platforms have retry mechanisms for seconds or minutes at best. After that, those events are gone. Or they’re buffered and replayed later, but the state of each system has changed since, so now the integration is overwriting recent changes. Systems are out of sync with no way to recover because most integrations are stateless. They take events, act on them, and forget everything. Now you've got business teams trying to figure out what's missing and IT doing forensics through logs. Or just scrambling to find who built the integration in the first place. Someone could even be attempting manual corrections that trigger new automations and create an even bigger mess. This is why integrations are an afterthought in disaster recovery. Everyone focuses on getting the end systems back online first. But they're going to be the longest part of the cleanup. We built Unito to be stateful, and remember the sync state (without actually storing the data). When outages happen, it checks what changed on either side since the last sync and gets everything back in order automatically. This morning was a pretty good proof point for why that matters.
