Despite the fact that women and girls have made major gains in education and health over the past decades, the gender gap still persists. At the current pace, global gender parity will take another 150(!) years due to systemic barriers like entrenched social norms, workplace discrimination and a financial system that was designed by men, for men. Why does this inequality endure and how can investors help close the gap? More importantly, how can we unlock the vast potential of the still underrepresented group? In this episode of Inside Impact Investing, podcast host Rosl Veltmeijer-Smits explores these questions with Marijn Wiersma (2X Global) and Maritza Cabezas Ludena (Triodos Bank). They discuss the challenges standing in the way of progress and the solutions needed to transform our financial system into one that is truly equal and inclusive. 🎧 Tune in to gain fresh insights: Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eiU_TTMw Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/e_Gqcu_W

When the Pacific Ocean’s surface temperatures rise above average, the consequences are far-reaching. El Niño – now occurring alongside other extreme weather events – disrupts livelihoods, food and energy systems and even financial stability. This year’s cycle could intensify, with impacts varying across regions, from commodity price volatility to inflation pressures and asset destruction in vulnerable areas. As economist Maritza Cabezas Ludena highlights: understanding these dynamics is essential – not just for assessing short-term market risks, but also for shaping effective adaptation and mitigation strategies. The question for investors and policymakers: How will we respond? 👉 Read the full insight here: https://lnkd.in/eWWZw76d

Climate change is not a distant threat. It is already here. This summer’s extreme weather made that clear. Heatwaves, droughts and wildfires are already disrupting the assets that keep our food systems, supply chains and economies running. But for investors, this is not a signal to pull back – it is a call to act, writes Karel Nierop, our Head of Products and Solutions, in this article. The solution lies in regenerative agriculture and forestry. By moving away from short-term extraction and towards practices that work with nature, we can: 🌱 Build resilience: healthier soils, more diverse forests and water-smart farming are better able to withstand crises 📉 Cut costs: less need for fertilisers and pesticides can support stronger margins 📈 Create new and better revenue streams: carbon credits, ecosystem services, higher product margins, renewable and long-term land value 🌳Future-proof portfolios: assets that can adapt to climate change are more likely to retain their value The Value Nature Fund (a collaboration between Triodos Investment Management and Canadian partner Fondaction Gestion d’actifs) is one example of how investors can back this transition. The strategy will invest in farmland and forests across Europe and North America, working with trusted local partners to implement regenerative agriculture and nature-aligned forestry practices. 🌱 Institutional investors are increasingly recognising biodiversity loss as a genuine systemic risk. Finding scalable, investable solutions however remains a challenge. At Triodos Investment Management, we see sustainable agriculture and forestry as a concrete way forward. By connecting biodiversity to land use, we can present a compelling business case that delivers both positive impact and solid returns. As Karel Nierop, Head of Products & Solutions, highlights: “It’s not enough just to minimise harm. We need to finance real solutions that support future-fit farms and forests - assets that will generate yields for decades to come.” Whereas significant global investment still flows into harmful practices, private funding for biodiversity is still limited, and scalable options are rare. Our forthcoming biodiversity fund, set to launch in collaboration with Canadian partner Fondaction, is designed to address this gap. Focusing on regenerative agriculture and forestry in developed markets, the fund will invest in local operators with proven expertise in sustainable land management. As a significant generational transfer of farmland and forests approaches, we believe there is real potential for investors to be part of a transformative shift towards nature-positive land use - one that supports biodiversity, climate resilience and long-term portfolio performance. 👉Read the full interview with Karel Nierop on our website: https://lnkd.in/e96-TX64

While markets obsess over geopolitical tensions, interest rates and inflation, the systemic threats of a warming planet are already eroding productivity, disrupting supply chains, and inflating costs, writes Hadewych Kuiper in her new column. Unlike a blocked strait, these impacts are permanent and accelerating. Yet they’re still treated as secondary concerns by many investors and policymakers. Extreme weather events caused by global warming are increasing, both in number and severity, with real consequences for corporate profits and asset valuations. Ignoring these risks isn’t just shortsighted, it’s a breach of fiduciary duty, argues Kuiper: "Research shows that a failed low-carbon transition could wipe 33% off pension fund returns worldwide by 2050. This is around the time that today’s 30-somethings retire, and they’ll know whether their pension fund manager ignored the climate and social risks." Biodiversity is increasingly recognised as a critical factor in long-term investment strategies. With 50% of global GDP dependent on nature, the need for action is clear – but the path forward requires a targeted approach. The most significant opportunities lie in real assets, particularly in sectors where biodiversity impact is most pronounced: forestry and agriculture. These areas present both challenges and potential for meaningful change, offering institutional investors a way to align financial objectives with environmental outcomes. In this IPE webcast, you will learn: ✅ Why land use is central to effective biodiversity investment strategies ✅ The business rationale behind transitioning to regenerative practices ✅ Key value drivers that support long-term investment in biodiversity ✅ Why now is the time to act Join the webcast we have organised in partnership with IPE and gain insights into how biodiversity can be integrated into real asset investment strategies.
