Minnesota’s Department of Labor audited 19 construction projects over 3 years and recovered $1.28 million in back wages. I wrote about why this happens in Construction Business Owner Magazine & Digital Media. Stories like this often get framed as bad actors, and sometimes they are. But in construction, a lot of these failures start somewhere far less dramatic. I’ve seen it time and time again: five or six disconnected back-office systems held together by Excel spreadsheets, creating gaps that are all too easy to overlook. This needs to change. Contractors spend a lot of time thinking about risk in the field, from cranes and safety to weather and jobsite conditions, and rightfully so. But the risk sitting inside the back office gets far less attention, and that’s a mistake. Catastrophic risk in construction doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like a spreadsheet no one questioned. Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/eqwaXeRR

Sage just said the quiet part out loud, and I am so here for it 😤 They just acquired Paperless Environments, the latest in a wave of construction software M&A. One line caught my eye: “Contractors should not have to piece together critical information from across their finance, project and field teams.” Sounds like something I’ve said once or twice. Contractors don’t want more software. They want one system that actually works together. But there’s a big difference between buying your way to all-in-one and building it that way from the start. When tools are acquired, integration is a roadmap item. When they’re built together, it’s the architecture. That’s how we’re building Trayd: Construction Payroll, HR, & Compliance. Payroll, job costs, billing, and accounting in one connected system. No handoffs. No re-entering data. No piecing it all together. It’s exciting to see the industry’s biggest players recognize what contractors have been saying for years. The future of construction software is connected. And at Trayd, we’re building it that way from day one. 🏗️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/gmn7aWpN

Construction software had a glow-up, then it had a breakdown. All-in-one used to mean something. One platform. Everything in one place. Then the M&A wave hit, and "all-in-one" became ten tools stapled together under the same logo. And construction contractors have been paying for it ever since. Jumping between systems. Entering the same data over and over again. Losing visibility at every handoff. Everyone simply accepted it as the standard. But we didn't. We're in a cloud-native, AI-ready era now, and the original promise is finally achievable. That's why we built Trayd Accounting. Payroll, job costs, billing, and the books in one system, built together from day one. A system of record, not a system of input. All in service of structuring unstructured data. When every hour worked flows straight into the general ledger, the data is structured from the moment the work happens. The golden age of construction software isn't nostalgia. It's what Trayd: Construction Payroll, HR, & Compliance is building right now. https://lnkd.in/gJNgktZ4

📋 Inside the Workflow: Custom Forms Most contractors have a paper trail held together with binder clips, group chats, and memory. A sign-in sheet housed in someone’s truck. A toolbox talk that may or may not have happened. A foreman’s end-of-day report buried in a text thread. When the Department of Labor shows up at your doorstep, you need to be ready. Contractors lose disputes, inspections, and hard-earned money because they can’t prove what happened on the job. Trayd: Construction Payroll, HR, & Compliance now has custom forms built directly into your crews’ clock-in and clock-out flow so safety talks, checklists, and daily reports actually get done, and you have the record to prove it. → Every form tied to the worker, project, and date → OSHA toolbox talks pre-built and enforceable → Voice-to-text for field crews who don’t want to type → Reminders and completion tracking so foremen never chase paper No extra app. No binders. No chasing paper. So when the DOL shows up, you’re not digging through a truck. You’re hitting print. #trayd #construction #contractors #technology #constructionpayroll #safetymanagement #product

I’ve been around construction my whole life and the analog back office has always bothered me. Paper everywhere. Disconnected systems. Payroll held together with workarounds. Finding out how a job actually performed 90 days after it’s already over. In the early days of Trayd, I sat in hundreds of contractor back offices trying to understand why so many teams were stuck in a “this is how it’s always been done” mentality. The answer was simple: payroll is too critical to risk changing. Even when the process is painful, replacing the system at the center of the operation can feel impossible. How do you swap out the control center of the business without disrupting everything around it? That’s the problem I couldn’t walk away from. It’s what pushed me to build Trayd: Construction Payroll, HR, & Compliance specifically for trade contractors, not retrofit generic software built for someone else. I talked through the whole story with Wissam Akra on Tough Leaf's Built Different: what I saw, why it matters, and what it takes to fix it.
