TRI-based Professor Katharina Ronacher from Mater Research has led the first study in the world to examine lung immune cells from people with diabetes who have been exposed to TB. The study has found type 2 diabetes disrupts the lung’s frontline immune cells, creating an environment where TB bacteria thrive. People with diabetes are three times more likely to develop TB, study first author Dr Léanie Kleynhans has found. TB is the leading cause of death from a single infectious pathogen, claiming 1.25 million lives annually. Popular holiday destination Bali is among the world's TB hotspots. Researchers at TRI have used the latest microchipping technology to confirm what office workers have long suspected – that teaspoons disappear from workplace tearooms at a consistent rate. TRI CEO Professor Maher Gandhi has led the research, finding teaspoons are lost at a rate of exactly 2.58 teaspoons per person per 100 teaspoon years in communal tearooms. No teaspoon companies were involved in the funding of the study. TRI researchers not only save lives but also have a sense of humour! Happy holidays from TRI.
