Retailers went early this Black Friday, and shoppers showed up. Week 1 of the 14-day trading period surged +6.8% year-on-year, with every channel showing growth as shoppers responded to earlier promotions. Meanwhile: Online maintained momentum all the way through, finishing strong with Cyber Monday up 5.2%. Black Friday itself grew +1.5%, showing continued consumer appetite. Black Saturday struggled, down –1.9%, and standalone stores in Week 2 took a hit at –0.1% overall, highlighting where the pressure points are. The big takeaway? A clear pivot to online and an earlier start to the event. Another month of healthy growth with Like-for-Like (LFL) sales UP 3% against last year. Crucially, the growth is being driven by volume: units sales saw a pleasant 2.1% increase, with the # of transactions soaring 3.2%. This surge in customer visits is the primary growth driver, despite a slight dip in Average Transaction Value (ATV) of 0.2%. We're also seeing more promotional activity, with Discounts UP 3.7%, but Gross Profit $ is UP 4.6% and Gross Profit % is up a full 1 percentage point! Tune into this month's episode of The Retail Scoreboard to learn about the nuances behind these figures and what this means for your retail strategy.
