Steve Jobs once threw an iPhone across a room to prove it was ready. We delayed a product launch for over eight months because it wasn't. There's a range we've been working on all year. High demand. Customers asking when it'll be available. Every commercial reason to get it out the door. But when it comes down to it, the product wasn't quite there. Sure, in its earlier iterations it was still functional, safe, met all the standards. But it wasn't good enough for us to put in the product system. It wasn't what residents deserved. So we said no. We went back. We dug deeper into the technical challenges, refusing to compromise. The delays have been frustrating. But what we're launching will be worth the wait. In our industry, where we're serving some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, "good enough" should never be good enough. The Pure Food Co

At The Pure Food Co, we’ve built our business around showing that commercial doesn’t mean compromise — proving that quality ingredients, expert preparation, and uncompromising standards can deliver exceptional results at scale. In our latest blog, we share how this philosophy comes to life in every meal we create for aged care residents. From our slow-cooked Braised Beef to creamy Vege Bake, each dish is carefully designed to be nutritious, safe, and delicious — while meeting the highest texture-modified standards for residents with swallowing difficulties. But it’s not just about nutrition and safety. It’s about enjoyment, dignity and choice at mealtimes. Our meals are crafted to delight the senses, giving residents the pleasure of home-style cooking without compromising on health or convenience for care teams. Leadership doesn’t happen behind a desk. The best leaders I’ve met are the ones who get out there. They walk the floor, talk to teams, and see challenges first-hand. They make an effort to understand reality before deciding what, if anything, needs to change. I met Kelvin Neave from Dougherty Apartments recently and watched the way he moves through his home. He stops to chat with residents, checks in with his kitchen team, notices the small things. It’s not a performance, it’s just how he leads. You can tell a lot about a place by how often the boss turns up outside the office. The best ones don’t need a clipboard or a meeting to understand what’s going on. They already know, because they’ve been there all week. In aged care, that kind of presence matters.

Yesterday’s story in The Age was a tough read: choking deaths in care have increased sharply – and every single one of them was preventable. For anyone working in food, nutrition or care, this really hits home. We all want mealtimes to be safe, dignified and enjoyable – not something people have to fear. But the reality is it’s not always simple. It comes down to a mix of things: the right textures, the right supervision, and good communication across teams. With the new Aged Care Quality Standards now in force, this story is a timely reminder for all of us to take a really close look at how we’re managing these risks and how we can do better. For us, it underscores that the work we do at The Pure Food Co matters so much, and how important it is that we keep learning, innovating, and working together to make mealtimes safe for everyone in our care. It’s always a privilege to spend time in aged care communities that are truly proud of what they do - and Regis Aged Care Chelmer is one of those places. Sam and I were lucky enough to be hosted there recently, and it’s easy to see why residents and staff alike love it. From the warm welcome to the spotless kitchen and the pride the team take in every plate they serve - it’s exactly the kind of partnership that makes our work so rewarding. A big thank you to the team at Regis Chelmer for having us (and for letting us capture a few photos behind the scenes). Partnerships like this are what drive real progress in aged care: genuine collaboration, shared goals, and a commitment to doing things well. The Pure Food Co

I've never liked the word “supplier.” Suppliers drop boxes at the back door. Partners share the outcomes and the risks. What we do works best when we’re working fully in step with our customers, especially their teams on site serving our seniors. Partnership looks like: - pilots that de-risk change - training that sticks, not just one-off sessions - co-designing menus, measuring impact, even guiding conversations with families of residents We’re not just delivering products—we’re woven into the day-to-day system. Our focus is on creating calm, consistent, and better experiences for both residents and kitchen teams. A leader put it this way to me recently: “It was a real relief to have a partner who owned the outcome with us – sharing the responsibility, guiding our team, and supporting change every step of the way.” - top executive, leading aged care provider (shared with permission) That’s why the word “supplier” will never quite fit. Real partnership doesn’t stop at delivery – it stands behind the outcome. And a big thanks to Blair for having us in your kitchen. Chris Deed Penny Bailey Jean-Baptiste Marronnier The Pure Food Co
