One of the biggest themes our team heard at Snowflake Summit last week was the importance of a trusted data foundation for all the AI agents companies are building. In this Coffee Talks clip, I talk about why organizations that have already invested in a cloud data warehouse like Snowflake are well-positioned to build that foundation using AI-native MDM, which fits nicely into the modern data stack.

One of the biggest drivers behind MDM initiatives? Breaking down data silos. Many organizations are structured by business unit, geography, or product line, which often means separate CRM, ERP, and back-office systems. The result is fragmented customer data and missed opportunities for better cross-sell, upsell, and customer experiences. In the latest Coffee Talks in Harvard Square, I share why connecting those silos is foundational to driving real business outcomes with AI-ready data. #MDM #DataManagement #DataSilos

Gartner has brought back the Magic Quadrant for Master Data Management Solutions. MDM is having a moment. I’ve said it. Malcolm Hawker has said it. And many others are saying it as well. The big question is “Why now?” It’s because AI is making everything go faster. And this reality is making the pain associated with data silos and fragmented views of data exponentially more acute. Think about it in the context of software development. When humans developed 100% of the code, feature development moved slower. People wrote bad features or introduced bugs, but the pace of development was in line with the pace of governance protocols and human review to catch and remedy these problems. Today, AI tools like Claude Code build code, but they build it much, much faster than humans. They make mistakes—just like humans—but because these tools move at such an accelerated pace, testing frameworks and CI/CD pipelines struggle to keep up. It’s not that AI is writing crappy code; it’s just that speed is outpacing governance. Errors are moving through the process at a much higher rate, and that exacerbates code quality issues and the potential for shipping defective software. Enterprise data remains trapped in silos. AI systems and AI agents lack a holistic, contextual view of the data. In an effort to satisfy user requests—and because they don’t know which record is the master record—AI systems and agents pick one and expose it throughout the process. Because the cycle time is expedited greatly by AI, the data speeds through processes, exposing fissures and cracks in the system. Which brings us back to why MDM is having a moment. MDM solutions essentially serve as a clearinghouse, bringing siloed data together and acting as a single point of reference for AI workflows (I’ve often called it “a tree of IDs”). By identifying existing relationships in the data and linking them together via a context graph, an AI-native MDM like Tamr provides clean, organized, up-to-date data that minimizes the risk of poor-quality information propagating throughout the enterprise.
