The Global Plastics Treaty is a turning point for reducing plastic pollution. Adopted in 2022, the treaty sets a legally binding goal to eliminate plastic waste by 2040. A dedicated task force, the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC), is shaping its framework. Africa contributes just 5% of global plastics but suffers disproportionate pollution due to imports and inadequate waste systems. The treaty offers African nations a chance to mitigate pollution while receiving global support. Key tools include: ♻️ Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) – shifting the cost of waste from governments to producers ♻️ Deposit-return incentives – where feasible ♻️ Context-specific single-use plastic strategies – implemented fairly and realistically Our FREE e-learning course, Waste Management and the Global Plastics Treaty, equips you with the knowledge to support national action plans and sustainable solutions in your community.
