How long will your solar PV and battery system really last? Let’s break it down: ☀️Solar PV panels typically come with 25–30 year performance warranties, but they don’t just stop working after that. They can continue producing power for 40–50 years, just with reduced efficiency. 🔋Battery systems tend to have shorter lifespans, but thanks to improved chemistries and smart energy management, today’s batteries offer much longer lifecycles. A well-designed, properly maintained system can deliver reliable energy for decades, with predictable output and performance built into your contract. If your renewable energy plant underperforms, who carries the risk? You or your provider? When you enter into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with an Independent Power Producer (IPP), typically spanning 5-20 years, the plant’s annual production performance is contractually guaranteed. If the solar plant underperforms and does not meet the minimum plant performance guarantee: • The IPP reimburses the offtaker (buyer of energy) for the loss in savings • The IPP carries out the necessary upgrades to restore the plant's performance to guaranteed levels Why this matters: • The client gets certainty that the plant will perform as expected • The responsibility and risk of underperformance stay with the IPP, not the offtaker This shifts operational and performance risk away from the offtaker, ensuring predictable energy cost savings and long-term system reliability. 🎥 Featured below is Sustainable Power Solutions (SPS) Business Developer, Dirk van Staden Would this kind of guarantee influence your decision-making? What does a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) Include? A PPA is a contract where an Independent Power Producer (IPP) finances, builds, and commissions a solar PV and/or battery energy storage system. Once operational, the IPP continues to maintain the plant throughout its lifetime. What’s covered in a PPA: • Construction and commissioning of the Solar PV plant • Full financing of the project - no hidden costs to client • Insurance, cleaning, spare parts, and warranty claims if needed • Ongoing maintenance and operations to ensure consistent performance, reliability, and maximum energy output throughout the contract period. In short, the IPP sells the clean energy generated while becoming an alternative energy supplier. This allows clients to focus on their core business while paying less for energy. 🎥 Featured below is Sustainable Power Solutions (SPS) Business Developer, Dirk van Staden Find out how a PPA can offer long-term certainty for your business operations 👉 https://lnkd.in/dDuYZYMG #SPSRenewableRoundTable

When load shedding takes a break, is there still a need for battery storage in the South African market?🔋 While battery energy storage systems (BESS) are often associated with backup power, their applications extend far beyond that. Businesses can realise significant financial and operational benefits by using batteries strategically. Key applications include: • Energy arbitrage - charging batteries when electricity is cheaper (for example, using solar during the day or off-peak at night) and discharging them when electricity tariffs are the highest. • Peak shaving/ demand management - discharging batteries during periods of high demand to reduce the reliance on council power. These examples show that battery storage is not only about energy security, but also a vital tool for optimising energy use and reducing costs. 🎥 Featured below: SPS Senior Battery Specialist, Johan Wolmarans Who carries the risk when a solar plant underperforms? Now that you’ve confirmed solar & battery are a good fit for your business, it’s time to consider a few more checks: 💰 First up: what kind of solution are you looking for? • Do you want to purchase the system outright? Or would a funded solution be a better fit? • Do you want to own the system, or would you rather pay a monthly fee with no upfront capital expense? This decision usually comes down to ONE key question: Does your business have capital available to invest in solar right now? (Or would you prefer to reserve that capital for your core operations, and treat energy as an operating expense while paying less for electricity from day one?) 🔧 From a practical perspective, there are also technical factors to review: - Is your roof structurally suitable? - What’s the load shedding situation in your area? - Do you already have backup generators on site? - What is your core need? Cost savings? Energy security? - Are you aiming to maximise Renewable Energy contribution to increase your RECs (Renewable Energy Certificates)? These are the kinds of questions that help ensure the solution you get aligns with your needs, so there are no surprises later on.
