TxDOT is constructing a 6.5-mile underground drainage tunnel as part of the $4.5 billion I-35 expansion through Travis County. Two Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines will advance the 22-foot-wide tunnel, which channels stormwater from newly lowered main lanes down to the Colorado River. Lowering the highway up to 65 feet below grade solves a traffic and connectivity problem. It also creates a stormwater management challenge on a scale most roadway projects never face, which is why the drainage system is being engineered as its own major infrastructure project. Amtrak is advancing the Frederick Douglass Tunnel Program (formerly the B&P Tunnel Replacement Program) in Baltimore, with utility relocation work, underway since 2024, reaching a major milestone: completion of a new 345-foot utility tunnel. The utility tunnel clears and protects critical underground infrastructure ahead of major tunnel construction, reducing risk to existing services and maintaining continuity across a dense urban corridor. This phase sets the groundwork for full tunnel replacement, including two tunnel boring machines now in fabrication and reconstruction of the first of five railroad bridges along the alignment, a key upgrade to improve reliability, capacity, and long-term resilience along the Northeast Corridor. TxDOT has opened the state's first mechanical runaway truck ramp on Loop 375 in El Paso. Unlike traditional gravel ramps, the system uses eight energy-absorbing net stations anchored to reinforced concrete walls to stop vehicles, designed to arrest a 90,000-lb truck traveling at 90 mph within a constrained footprint. The installation sits in the median, addressing limited right-of-way near the I-10 interchange where conventional ramp geometry wasn't feasible. Similar mechanical systems exist in states like Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada, but those are built on mountainsides, this is believed to be the first flat, in-median application of its kind in the country. The system can be reset in as little as four hours after use. It introduces a different approach to roadside safety: compact systems that can be deployed where terrain or space doesn't allow standard escape ramps. The Marine Creek Interceptor Improvements project upgraded critical wastewater infrastructure near Marine Creek Lake in Fort Worth, Texas, requiring construction in an active recreational and environmentally sensitive area while keeping the wastewater system fully functional. Stiver Engineering provided specialty structural and trench safety engineering services in support of construction, including a trench safety plan addressing project-specific excavation conditions, and structural design for a precast manhole evaluated for site loading and long-term performance. Practical engineering support like this keeps critical wastewater infrastructure projects moving safely, even in sensitive and constrained environments. A $500M regional water initiative is transforming coastal Georgia's water infrastructure - expanding treatment capacity in Effingham County, upgrading Savannah's aging I&D plant, and extending supply to support rapid growth near the Hyundai Metaplant. Big infrastructure moves like this run on solid planning and execution. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eTb5jERd #WaterInfrastructure #CoastalGeorgia #InfrastructureInvestment #Stiver

Selecting a shoring system is never a one-size-fits-all decision. Soil mix walls, tangent pile walls, and secant pile walls each have distinct structural characteristics and conditions where they are the right fit. Choosing correctly requires site-specific geotechnical data, groundwater conditions, excavation geometry, and an understanding of what's adjacent. Get it wrong and it affects safety, schedule, and cost. Our latest blog breaks down how these three systems differ and what drives the decision:https://lnkd.in/e99Gq5JE
