Some connections feel urgent, even from thousands of miles away. Living in the U.S., I do not experience daily life in Israel firsthand, yet I feel a deep responsibility to stay close to the people behind the headlines, especially the small business owners working to protect all they have built. At SparkIL, my role is centered on helping educators, schools, and communities build a more personal connection to Israel through the stories of real small business owners. I see how much shifts when Israel is experienced through people’s lives, work, and daily realities. These business owners are carrying families, livelihoods, and years of hard work through an incredibly difficult season. They need to feel that people across the Jewish world are still with them, still paying attention, and still showing up. This is a moment to stay close to the people building, persevering, and holding so much together. Meet the people behind these businesses and choose to show up for them here: www.sparkil.org/lend/ SparkIL-Micro Loans, Macro Impact

A few months ago, I joined SparkIL. Before that, I worked at Yissum, a tech transfer within The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and I still volunteer as Director of Marketing for Women in Tech® Israel. These experiences have taught me the determination and creativity that shape Israel’s innovation ecosystem, from companies like Mobileye to entrepreneurs building from the ground up. At SparkIL, I see that same resilience in small business owners who refuse to give up. Since the beginning of the war, tens of thousands of businesses in Israel have been forced to close, most of them small and medium-sized. Behind every number is a person, a family, and years of hard work at risk. At SparkIL, founded by the The Jewish Agency for Israel, Ogen and supported by the Jewish Federations of North America, we help small businesses access resources that they need to keep going and rebuild. Every one of us can make a difference. Visit our page, find the business you want to support, and be part of their recovery. For you, it may be a small loan. For them, it can be a life-changing step forward. https://SparkIL.org/lend

What happens to a business built on celebration when celebrations are put on hold? Mino Cocktails creates full bar experiences for events across Israel, bringing creativity and atmosphere to every gathering. Their work is about bringing people together around a shared table. Since the war began before Purim, events were canceled, and many future bookings became uncertain. When gatherings slow, revenue slows with them. Still, they continue planning, refining menus, staying in touch with clients, and preparing for the moment events return. Mino Cocktails is part of the SparkIL small business community, entrepreneurs navigating uncertainty without stepping back. Stand with Israeli small businesses that bring people together. Lend today at www.sparkil.org and help keep the spirit alive.

In a recent article posted on The Times of Israel, Rabbi Steven Wernick writes that Zionism today is not expressed through statements or declarations, but through responsibility for people living real lives under extraordinary pressure. It is about standing with Israelis in ways that help them move forward with dignity. That understanding became personal through one story. A small coffee business near the Gaza border. A business owner doing her best to hold together her livelihood, her family, and a sense of normal life. Rabbi Wernick chose to respond in a way that reflected those values, through a direct, interest free loan made via SparkIL. We are proud that SparkIL was part of this story and grateful for leaders who help turn values into meaningful action. Sometimes, that action begins with a cup of coffee. Recently, we had the privilege of a very special visit. Marsha Riklis and her daughter Daniella came to Israel, and together with Amira, SparkIL’s Chairwomen, we went to meet Lior and shared a bowl of soup at Alma Soups- his small business he opened on Herzel Street in Tel Aviv. The extended Riklis family were among the very first to believe in SparkIL-Micro Loans, Macro Impact, back when it was still just an idea. Seeing their excitement as they witnessed how that early trust now supports more than 650 small businesses and families was deeply moving. Lior is one of them. He served over 500 days of reserve duty this past year, and in the midst of it all, chose to leave hi-tech and build something for his soul. A place of warmth, care, and nourishment for others. Moments like this are a powerful reminder that behind every loan is a person, a family, and a story. And that trust, when passed forward, can create impact far beyond what we imagine. Grateful for early believers, for courageous entrepreneurs, and for the small businesses that keep our communities strong.

How do you help a child thousands of miles away feel that Israel matters to them? JEWISHcolorado recently shared a powerful example. A few weeks ago, at a community event, eight-year-old Emmett received a SparkIL digital gift card. Instead of simply hearing about Israel, he sat with his parents and explored real Israeli small businesses looking for support. They read the stories. They looked at the people behind the businesses. They chose together. Emmett’s pick? Looly Chocolate. Behind the chocolate is a small business rebuilding after its founder spent 200 days in IDF reserve duty during the war. For this family in Colorado, Israel was no longer distant. It became a real person, a real story, and a real way to help. Thank you to the donors and to SparkIL lenders who make these connections possible while supporting Israeli small businesses during challenging times. This month, we’ve seen those values in action: reservists like Rafael, Yehouda, and Raanan, and the lenders standing behind them. Our Bar/Bat Mitzvah program invites students and families to connect with Israel through entrepreneurship. Each small business is another opportunity to forge a real connection with Israel and its people. Tzedakah stops being a concept. It becomes a person they know by name. META · UNKNOWNSince 4 Oct 2026Active on Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network, Messenger, Threads. Every child deserves a place where their voice can be heard 💜 Marsel Efrat Cohen Pollack created a children's theater company from a deeply personal place. She lost her mother when she was only eight months old and grew up as an only child, carrying the loneliness and challenges of that experience into adulthood. Marsel chose to write a different future for herself. She built a family, became the mother she had missed, and created a business where children can find joy, confidence, and freedom through performance. Today, her company provides educational programs, theater classes, and acting workshops for schools, kindergartens, municipalities, and community centers across Israel. Each program gives children a welcoming space to imagine, participate, and believe in themselves. Funding through SparkIL will help Marsel purchase professional stage scenery, update her educational materials, reach more municipalities, and hire qualified instructors so the company can serve more children. META · UNKNOWNSince 4 Oct 2026Active on Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network, Messenger, Threads. Meet the family behind פרחים משתלת מאירי (Meiri Nursery), a beloved nursery in Moshava Kinneret near the Sea of Galilee. The nursery was founded more than 50 years ago by Avner and Sara, who began by growing roses and cypresses on the same land where the nursery still operates today. Since then, it has grown into a family business passed down through generations, offering houseplants, ornamental plants, flower arrangements, and a warm local space connected to the land. Recently, the war led to a serious shortage of manpower, making it difficult to maintain the greenhouse to the standard the family works so hard to uphold. Eligible family members were called up under Order 8, and daily operations became harder to manage during an already challenging time. As Israel moves through the growing season, Meiri Nursery is working to rehabilitate and expand its growing area, introduce new plant varieties, and upgrade its infrastructure for the future. Through SparkIL, you can become part of this family’s story and help keep a long-standing agricultural business by the Sea of Galilee growing. META · IMAGESince 4 Oct 2026Active on Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network, Messenger, Threads. The smell of kubbeh soup can make a grown man cry. Lior knows this. That's why he built Alma Restaurant. He grew up watching his grandmother cook Iraqi and Kurdish dishes the way she always had. With time and with care. Lior is a reservist who came back. And when he did, he came back to his pots. Now he serves those same flavors to people who haven't tasted them since childhood and to younger generations discovering them for the first time. He calls it "the taste of once." The food that lives in your memory before your tongue can even place it. For Lior, food is gemilut hasadim. A way to honor the families and communities who carried these recipes across borders and generations. His greatest pride is making sure those stories stay here, in Israel, on the table, in every bite.
