Great to see the pace of space-based computing conversations these days ... especially as pressure mounts to relieve Earth’s bottleneck. What’s often overlooked? ... the “cool” of space. Yes, space is cold ... but it’s also a vacuum, which means you can’t rely on convection to shed heat the way terrestrial data centers do when there's no atmosphere. That means if computing is really going to scale beyond Earth, we need to rethink data centers from the ground up. #Heat isn’t an afterthought. It becomes core to the very architecture. And at Sophia Space, that’s exactly the challenge we’re designing for: #Datacenters that don’t just operate in space, but are fundamentally built for it. Almost every day now, we’re seeing headlines about #orbitaldata centers. To quote a The Wall Street Journal write-up, “the race to build an #orbitalcloud seems now underway.” In fact, as Micah Maidenberg and Becky Peterson write, “the intensifying focus on space-based infrastructure is already giving a jolt to publicly traded companies in the space sector. Investor interest suggests this new market could generate significant revenue for the entire supply chain.” "Rocket Lab USA ... gained over 8%. As a leading launch provider, Rocket Lab stands to benefit from a potential boom in missions needed to deploy hundreds or even thousands of AI-enabled satellites. "AST SpaceMobile Inc ... Ticked up over 5%. Although focused on "satellite-to-cellphone" communication, the company’s large satellite technology and manufacturing expertise position it as a potential player in the broader space infrastructure build-out. There was also market speculation several months back that the company was to deepen ties with Blue Origin." And yet while investors watch established players, Sophia Space is not so quietly building the orbital systems that are likely to actually define the next era of space-based computing ... creating the platforms (and cooling systems) that can handle this next generation of #AI workloads in space. Have a listen to Sophia Space CEO and Co-founder Robert DeMillo explain the how and why: https://lnkd.in/gEt4BCkc https://lnkd.in/gqjPBRBg #OrbitalDataCenters #SpaceInfrastructure #CloudInSpace #OrbitalTech #SatelliteAI #AIInSpace #NextGenTech #SpaceInnovation #TechFrontiers #FutureOfComputing

The threat landscape isn’t just evolving. It’s spiking. #Hypersonics compress reaction times. #Droneswarms turn $5K of hardware into a $50M problem. And virtually every modern attack fuses cyber, electronic warfare, autonomy, sensing, and strike into a single, lethal kill chain. Defending against this speed and complexity requires a new approach; one that pulls together satellite, atmospheric, and ground-system data into processing points capable of handling multiple, simultaneous threats. And of course, that inevitably points to more compute in orbit, closer to where many of these threats actually originate. Still, proximity isn’t enough. These systems must scale, be powered and cooled independently, and integrate across multiple domains. And that’s exactly what we’re building at Sophia Space: modular, scalable orbital compute, which allows a chaotic battlespace to be transformed into one where decision-makers regain the edge. An update from #ElonMusk, who is very clearly thinking a lot about orbital infrastructure (and data) ... along with some new timetables. “A major additional factor should be considered. Satellites with localized AI compute, where just the results are beamed back from low-latency, sun-synchronous orbit, will be the lowest cost way to generate AI bitstreams in <3 years. And by far the fastest way to scale within 4 years, because easy sources of electrical power are already hard to find on Earth.” Remember ... it's not just about launch and power. We've also got to solve for that silent gatekeeper in orbit: Heat. Fortunately, it's something our team has been working on since their days at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Sophia Space https://lnkd.in/gDxNbTAb #OrbitalAI #AIinSpace #SatelliteCompute #SpaceInfrastructure #NextGenAI #AIbitstreams #SunSynchronousOrbit #SpaceInnovation #FutureOfCompute #SophiaSpace

The European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) just dropped a landmark report … arguing that #orbitaldatacenters are on their way to becoming “the backbone of the second digital era.” As ESPI’s Jermaine F. Gutierrez puts it: They "could fundamentally transform how we process #data, manage #energy, and maintain #digitalsovereignty. #Europe has world-class space technology and strong institutions. The question is whether we’ll use them to lead this revolution or watch others define the future of computing.” Meanwhile, leaders across #tech … #Bezos, #Pichai, #Musk, even #Alibaba ’s cloud chiefs ... are also signaling the same thing. Fortunately, that’s just what we at Sophia Space have been building toward. Jeremy Hsu at Scientific American raises a great point when it comes to orbital data. "To cool off," he writes, "orbital platforms need large radiators that can dump heat into the vacuum of space, adding significant mass that has to be launched on rockets. All these plans ultimately collide with one stubborn constraint: getting hardware into space." But what if we stopped treating heat like an inconvenient side problem and started designing around it. Picture super-thin computer panels that get rid of heat by spreading it evenly across every inch of the module itself, without clunky extra gadgets or the sucking of energy from existing infrastructure. Those modules, which turn to both soak up sunlight and shed heat on opposite sides, not only can shuffle workloads depending on temperature, but actually start to change our very notions of what a data center looks and feels like. The need for these "large radiators" then drops remarkably, allowing payload to focus on actual compute. At Sophia Space, building on decades of legacy research at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, we've been building exactly this kind of integrated approach.
