Leadership expectations have shifted dramatically in recent years. But this is likely no surprise to you. In my recent work with organisations, I have noticed a consistent tension: Leaders are expected to be more consultative than ever before, and more decisive than ever before. Diversity of thought is critical to complex decision-making in uncertain times. Leading a mutli-generational workforce requires different styles of engagement and a subtle balance between psychological safety and accountability. And at the same time, organisations need leaders to act with clarity and speed. Holding these different demands together is not always intuitive, but it is becoming a defining leadership discipline. I’ve written a short article exploring this leadership paradox and what it means for leaders and organisations moving into 2026. You can read it here on the Serendis Leadership blog: https://lnkd.in/g7yTGQgF I hope this helps (just a little bit!) with some practical ideas. I would also love to hear your perspectives. #leadership #adaptiveleadership #leadershipdevelopment

Many leaders build their careers on deep technical expertise. Their judgement is respected. Their analysis is trusted. But as roles become more senior, the definition of success begins to shift. In complex B2B environments, outcomes are rarely determined by capability alone. While organisations may reference pricing, governance or technical strength, decisions are often shaped by something more fundamental: 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁. Leaders who succeed in these environments understand that influence, relationships and business development are not about “selling”. They are about building credibility over time through thoughtful questions, sound judgement and a genuine understanding of what matters to others. Our latest article explores how technically strong leaders can make the transition from expert to trusted advisor without losing authenticity. How do technically brilliant leaders succeed in roles where influence, relationships and business development suddenly become central to their success? Many leaders in investment banking, professional services, funds management and other B2B environments rise through the ranks because of their technical expertise. Their judgement is respected. Their analysis is trusted. And then the role changes. Success is no longer defined only by being right. It becomes about being chosen. Chosen by clients. Chosen by colleagues. Chosen for the next opportunity or strategic mandate. Technical capability still matters, but it is no longer the deciding factor. What often determines the outcome is something far more fundamental: trust. In complex B2B environments, decisions are rarely made on logic alone. Stakeholders may reference capability, pricing or governance frameworks, but in practice they choose people they trust, and then justify the decision with rational arguments afterwards. For many technically oriented leaders, the need to demonstrate influence, relationship building and business development, can feel unfamiliar and uncomfortable. Yet the most effective leaders are not the most persuasive or performative. They are the ones who build genuine trust. They do this by understanding what matters to others, asking thoughtful questions and demonstrating consistent judgement over time. In my latest article, I explore how technically strong leaders can make the transition from expert to trusted advisor without losing authenticity. Today’s leaders face a growing tension: 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲. Holding these two capabilities together is not intuitive. Yet it is becoming one of the defining leadership disciplines of this era. In our latest blog, Serendis Leadership Founder Maud Lindley explores this leadership paradox and what it means for organisations developing leaders in 2026 and beyond. Most of my days are spent in rooms with leaders and teams, facilitating conversations, coaching executives, and helping organisations think differently about how to develop their people. I truly love what I do. But recently, I discovered a new passion… podcasting allows me to sit down for a different kind of conversation. It almost feels like a coaching conversation but with the awareness that other people will be listening :-) It's a privilege to listen to thoughtful leaders from across different industries and explore the moments that shaped them. The mentors who influenced their thinking, the questions that changed their direction, and the insights they now pass on to others. So, I’m excited to share that Season 3 of #MentoringUnlocked is now live on your favourite streaming app. We’re kicking off the season with Michaela Wortley, Oceania Inclusiveness Business Partnering Lead at EY, in a conversation about how EY has embedded coaching into its culture. Michaela shines a light on how coaching plays a pivotal role during key career moments. Those moments when you step into something new, take on greater responsibility, or begin asking deeper questions about who you are as a leader. What is your leadership purpose? How do you articulate the value you bring? Because when leaders take the time to explore those questions, they transform their impact from managing outcomes to leading people. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as Michaela and I did recording it. 🎧 Listen to the first episode of the new season by searching 'Mentoring Unlocked' on your favourite streaming platform.
