Two things grow a newsletter business. Keeping the advertisers you have, and charging more for the audience you've built.

Your advertiser asks one question at renewal: did anyone actually see our placement?

Publishers. Your open rate looks fine. But is your newsletter actually landing in the inbox? For a publisher, every email stuck in spam is a sponsor placement nobody saw and revenue you can't prove. On July 30, LB Blair goes live to answer your deliverability questions. She untangles inbox placement at 500M+ emails a month for the likes of Milk Road, 1440, and Morning Brew. No slides. No pitch. Bring your worst inbox problem and she'll walk through it, live. Free. 45-min. Save your spot: sendx.io/ama

If you run a newsletter, there's a question you never because it's too boring to think about. But it costs you your sponsorship revenue, subscription revenue, and audience trust. The que is: How can I better monitor and test my deliverability? When deliverability works, it's invisible. Nothing to see, nothing to celebrate. So nobody thinks about it until the mail stops landing and by then you're not monitoring, you're doing damage control. The whole point is to smell smoke before the whole house catches. But most platforms won't even give you a smoke detector. What you actually need is the breakdown by MAILBOX PROVIDER. Is it Office 365. Is it Google Workspace. Is it Proofpoint. That's the difference between catching a problem early and finding out from your dipping revenue. If email makes you money, it deserves risk management. And risk gets managed when you can monitor it.

If you publish a newsletter, I URGE you to ask harder questions. Ask questions that don't have an obvious number sitting in a dashboard already. 👉 Does my cheapest acquisition channel bring my worst subscribers? Everyone tracks cost per subscriber. Almost nobody tracks it against how long that subscriber stays. A subscriber who costs $2 and quits in a month is more expensive than one who costs $8 and stays two years. 👉 What did the subscribers who stayed do in their first two weeks that the ones who left didn't? Retention is decided early, in a window you are not watching. If you knew the early signal, you could act on new subscribers while you still can, instead of mourning them a quarter later. 👉 What share of my revenue comes from what share of my list? If 5% of subscribers drive most of the money, then growing the other 95% is theater. The real question becomes: does my acquisition bring more of the 5%, or more of the 95%? 👉 Every extra send I add, what does it cost me to unsubscribe? More sends looks like more revenue because the revenue is visible and the churn is not. You may be burning the list to hit this month's number. How long does a subscriber take to go from signup to silence? 👉 Not a snapshot of who is active. The shape of the curve. That half-life tells you whether your content compounds interest or leaks it. If you're tracking any of these, I'd love to know what you learned. Especially the thing that surprised you, or the number that looked fine until you broke it apart.

The newsletter industry is still selling ads the same way it did five years ago. List size, opens, clicks. That's about to STOP working. Advertisers are moving to buying on business outcomes and asking for actual revenue/conversions attributed to the placement, not a proxy metric they're supposed to trust. Which means the newsletter operator still selling a rate card based on audience size is about to lose sponsors. The operators who win the next cycle are the ones who figure out how to prove conversions, not clicks. And that starts one layer deeper than most people are looking. It starts with whether the email is actually landing in the inbox in the first place. You can't sell revenue you can't deliver.
