Business pressure in pharmacy isn’t going away. The question is whether it’s managed in a way that supports good care—or quietly undermines it. In a recent article, pharmacist and healthcare executive Michael N. and our founder, Aly Háji, explore how economic realities shape community pharmacy practice in Ontario and across Canada. They argue that business pressure is not the problem in itself; the problem is when funding models, compensation structures, and regulatory frameworks are misaligned with the clinical work pharmacists are actually trained and required to do. The piece highlights three areas for constructive reform: 💰 Compensation and funding: Moving beyond chronic “dispensing deficits” by funding pharmacy as a clinical service, indexing fees to real costs, and exploring compensation models that better align risk, reward, and professional responsibility. ⚖️ Regulation of pressure: Recognizing that quotas, targets, and throughput expectations exist in every part of the system—including regulatory bodies—and setting clear, enforceable standards for how they interact with patient care and professional obligations. 📊 Economic and structural literacy: Treating business literacy as a core competency, so pharmacists and pharmacy leaders can understand how care is funded, how workplaces stay viable, and when economic directives conflict with regulatory duties. Across all of this, one theme is constant: pharmacists are not asking to be shielded from reality. They are asking for a reality in which doing the right thing for patients is also the rational thing for their practice and businesses. At RxLaw, we are proud to contribute to this conversation, and to stand with pharmacists, owners, and organizations working to align business structures with ethical, sustainable care. ⚖️ #RxLaw #Pharmacy #HealthcareRegulation #BusinessOfPharmacy #HealthPolicy #ProfessionalDiscipline #PharmacyLeadership #PatientSafety #CorporateGovernance #OntarioHealth #RegulatedProfessions

The Government of Ontario will move to ban closed pharmacy networks 🎆. We see this is the culmination of years of advocacy, having the privilege of working together with organizations like the Ontario Pharmacists Association, OnPharm-United, and with thought leaders like Justin J. Bates, ICD.D, Michael N., Sherif Guorgui (FFIP), Anthony Grande, and too many others to name. Now it needs to be designed so so it works. We support the direction: open networks by default and clear pathways for patients to use the pharmacy they trust. That aligns with what we’ve argued from the outset: competition and continuity aren’t opposites—they’re prerequisites. Three design tests will decide whether this reform delivers: 1️⃣ True openness. If a pharmacy meets defined clinical and operational standards—and matches financial terms—it must be admitted. No opaque barriers dressed up as “quality.” 2️⃣ Anti‑steering, pro‑continuity. Ban tactics that pressure patients to switch pharmacies for single drugs. Protect the pharmacist‑patient relationship, especially for complex therapies. 3️⃣ Transparency + enforcement. Publish network criteria and contract parameters, audit them, and impose real penalties for gamesmanship. Specialty‑drug carve‑outs should not become backdoor monopolies. This is how you expand choice, level the field for independents, and keep plans sustainable without sacrificing care. We’ll keep pushing for a model that’s principled, practical, and provable. ⚖️ Kudos to Chris Hannay, Susan Krashinsky Robertson, and Clare O'Hara for your excellent reporting and coverage of this issue. #RxLaw #Pharmacy #HealthBenefits #Ontario #PPN #AnyWillingProvider #PatientSafety #AccessToCare #IndependentPharmacy #Competition #PolicyDesign #Regulation https://lnkd.in/gAF2fQqK

Every pharmacist thinks they’ll never get that email — until they do. A complaint lands. The College is watching. And suddenly, every word, every record, every decision matters. At Pharmacy U Vancouver 2025, Aly Háji, founder of RxLaw, will walk pharmacists through what really happens when the College of Pharmacists of BC comes calling — and how to stay in control when it does. 🤯 What to Do When the CPBC Comes for You 🗓 Saturday, November 1, 2025 — 3:55 PM 📍 Pharmacy U Vancouver Trained first as a pharmacist and later as counsel in professional discipline and regulatory litigation, Aly brings both lenses — the one that knows how the work feels, and the one that knows how the process works. This session exposes how complaints unfold, where risk hides, and how to respond with strategy instead of fear. Because defending your licence isn’t about luck — it’s about leverage. Don’t improvise under investigation. Execute a plan. Protect your licence. Protect your future. RxLaw. Regulatory clarity. Strategic defence. #PharmacyU #PharmacyLaw #Pharmacists #HealthcareRegulation #CPBC #ProfessionalDiscipline #RxLaw #PharmacyPractice #PharmacyLeadership #RiskManagement #PharmacyCompliance #PharmacyConference

We’re proud to share that Aly Háji, founder of RxLaw, will be speaking at the Apotex Inc. Fall Forum next week. His session will focus on how pharmacy owners can protect their practices and businesses in an increasingly complex regulatory environment. Complaints may appear minor, but the consequences of mishandling them are not. Education and foresight are critical—because defending a licence also means defending a livelihood. At RxLaw, we provide the clarity and strategy pharmacy professionals need to navigate complaints, safeguard their businesses, and meet the challenges of modern regulation. RxLaw. Regulatory clarity. Strategic defence. #Pharmacy #Regulation #Discipline #HealthcareLaw #PharmacyOwners #ProfessionalPractice #Governance #Compliance #RiskManagement #HealthLaw #Apotex #RxLaw
