What happens when you spray water directly into a turbine? 🤔 The air compressor causes the highest parasitic losses in a fuel cell - it costs energy to flow and compress large amounts of air. However, a great part of the energy can be recuperated with an expander/turbine, saving up to 40% of the energy. Or, in our case, add more total power to reach even higher flow/pressure levels (>55kW!). Although a fuel cell has no air pollution, the exhaust gas is full of water, which will go straight through the turbine. Water versus rotating elements, creates several technological challenges! In the video, you can see our EK40CT fuel cell air compressor going through some serious testing. It is fitted with a turbine whilst water injectors sprays water directly into the turbine whist running max speed - without any kind of droplet separators. Traction drives - what is so special about them? 🤔 Rotrex A/S invented the planetary traction drive, in pursuit of achieving class-leading, reliable speeds. In our Fuel Cell air compressors, the traction drive acts as a gearing between the electric motor and compressor wheel. One major benefits, is the ultra low-weight of the high-speed output shaft. Running at +140.000 rpm the low weight ensures that centrifugal forces are kept at a minimum. For reference, the output shaft of our largest EK40 compressor, weighs less than 80g although it can transmit more than 80kW! This means low centrifugal forces, no high-level balancing procedures nor requirement for sensitive bearing setups. Just reliable, ultra-high speed "Boosting the future".
