Non-firm generators do not have a contractual right to stay connected, and a DNO is entirely entitled to disconnect them. Catherine Cleary makes the case for more regular reporting on non-firm disconnections. Not a change to the rules, just transparency, and a closer look when an event has this much impact. At the bare minimum, it would help the wider developer community understand the risk. The bigger your connection, the more you need to understand the risks around it. Most developers only plan for normal network running. Philip Bale’s takeaway: the Southwest Peninsula is a particularly complex network, interconnected GSPs, multiple split options, long circuits. Developers should be asking whether N-1 is enough and starting a conversation with network operators about the worst case, the best case, and what is being done to avoid moving from one to the other. If you’re a developer with a large project in the pipeline, how aware are you of your risk exposure? Right now, only directly connected transmission generators get paid by NESO for commercial reactive power services. Distribution-connected generators do not have that option, even though the Southwest shows why some might want it. Catherine Cleary sets out the options NESO reviewed: extending procurement to distribution customers, a DSO-level market, DNOs acting as aggregators, or simply mandating minimum requirements with no market at all. NESO has come out fairly firmly in favour of the last option, which may create the wrong incentives. 🎧 Tune in here: https://lnkd.in/dP3qWnNP/?utm_campaign=%255B2026%255DPodcast:RiskyBusiness&utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=paid&utm_id=1229645943&hsa_acc=510629842&hsa_cam=1229645943&hsa_grp=896379863&hsa_ad=1584301553&hsa_net=linkedin&hsa_ver=3

The reason for taking the 400kV outage in the Southwest is a lack of reactive power control. Philip Bale thinks that might be solvable. If enough customers can offer reactive power control, potentially operating well beyond G99 requirements at an extreme fixed power factor for longer periods, that could be enough to keep the line in service. Customers who are inverter-connected and already sit at 132kV busbars would be potentially ideal candidates. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dP3qWnNP/?utm_campaign=%255B2026%255DPodcast:RiskyBusiness&utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=paid&utm_id=1229645943&hsa_acc=510629842&hsa_cam=1229645943&hsa_grp=896379863&hsa_ad=1584242753&hsa_net=linkedin&hsa_ver=3

Your time-to-power (energisation) depends on decisions made at almost every stage, not just the formal connection application. Understanding where those decisions sit, and which ones you still have influence over, can be the difference between a connection that arrives on schedule and one that quietly slips. During the live webinar, Connectologists® Pete, Rachael and Kyle cover questions such as where grid should be considered, and almost never is, and why the risks that appear latest cost the most. Wednesday 30 Sept, 10.00-11.00. You apply for your data centre connection, planning for two bays to meet UTI requirements. Then your offer arrives; the TO gives you three bays and a connection to an entirely different substation. There were only two spare bays left at the substation you wanted to connect to, and now you need to wait on a new substation to be built for three bays to be available, which might not be ready for another 10 years. For those waiting on Phase 2 offers, now is the time to get to grips with what to expect when you get your offer, and what to might want to question before it's reassessed and finalised. This is exactly what we are covering on the free time-to-power webinar, Wednesday, 30 September 2026, 10.00 to 11.00. https://lnkd.in/d5eqCYN2/?utm_campaign=%255B2026%255DWEBINAR:Iftime-to-powerisyourbiggestrisk,whatisthebiggestrisktoyourtime-to-power?&utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=paid&utm_id=1225605843&hsa_acc=510629842&hsa_cam=1225605843&hsa_grp=891489303&hsa_ad=1558560633&hsa_net=linkedin&hsa_ver=3
