Agrifirm farmers in the Netherlands switched to low carbon fertilizer, nitrogen stabilizers and controlled release fertilizer. Initial 2025 results show about 1,000 tonnes CO₂e reduced across wheat, barley and potatoes.

Most fertilizer emissions come from the field, not the factory. Nitrous oxide from fertilized soil is 273 times more potent than CO₂. These emissions can be quantified and reduced at farm level. See how Walther Farms in the US and Agrifirm in the Netherlands did it.

How much a fertilizer switch lowers a crop’s footprint depends on the crop and the intervention. Pick a crop, enter the volume you source in a year, and see estimated fertilizer emissions before and after.

Not every fertilizer change has the same effect. Low carbon fertilizer cuts production emissions, while stabilizers and controlled release fertilizer cut what’s released from the soil. The calculator shows how each choice changes your crop’s emissions.

Your Scope 3 fertilizer emissions may be bigger than you think.

If fertilizer isn’t in your Scope 3 plan, your numbers are incomplete. Download this white paper to understand where they really come from and what to do about it.
