Legacy procurement software doesn’t always look old. Sometimes it looks polished, well-funded, and freshly packaged. But underneath the branding, the same old problems keep piling up: more layers, more workarounds, more services, and more distance between procurement and financial reality. That’s the shift happening in the market. Yesterday’s disruptor can become today’s legacy faster than people expect.

Success is great. Gravity isn’t. As procurement software vendors expand, they add products, layers, service dependencies, and more architecture to manage. At some point, the thing that once felt simpler starts carrying the same weight as the systems it replaced. Legacy procurement software isn’t defined by age. It’s defined by complexity that slows you down.

Disruptors don’t stay disruptors forever. In procurement software, “modern” has a shelf life. What starts out lean can become heavy. What starts out simple can become layered. What starts out as a better alternative can start behaving like the legacy software it was built to replace. That’s the cycle our latest blog explores.

It used to take decades to become legacy software. Hypergrowth can get it done before the company hoodie fades. 👀 All it takes is an original idea carrying more products, more services, more packaging, more specialists, and more AI branding than it was ever designed to hold. Sometimes that takes twenty years. Sometimes it takes 6-7. The first generation of orchestration tools solved a real procurement problem. They gave employees a cleaner place to start and gave procurement a better way to coordinate the chaos around a request. Then hypergrowth moved in and started knocking down load-bearing walls. The product expanded. The commercial model thickened. Services became part of the furniture. AI arrived with fresh titles and an increasingly elaborate org chart. The software still “looks” young. The foundation has lower back pain, a mortgage, and strong opinions about “the way we’ve always done it.” That’s how a disruptor becomes an incumbent ahead of schedule. Architecture stretches, complexity settles in, and marketing (not you, Patrick Barrett) gets handed a mop and a launch date. A recent founding date won’t rescue it. A polished interface won’t either. Nor will fifty agents and a few newly promoted AI governors. Some of yesterday’s disruptors are discovering that you can still be too young to rent a car and somehow old enough to become the incumbent. I took a closer look at the new legacy, why hypergrowth speeds it up, and what buyers should examine beneath the modern story. Full read. 👉https://lnkd.in/exEDyidc

Coupa claims customers can achieve 276% ROI. Impressive number. Also one built around a composite company with 60,000 employees, $80B in revenue, and a very specific operating model. Use the Coupa ROI Assessment to compare that headline against your own implementation costs, services dependency, admin burden, and internal effort.

Replacing Coupa is a chance to leave behind the services dependency, admin burden, adoption drag, and expensive operating model that came with it. Download the practical guide to evaluating the real cost of staying, building the business case for change, and planning a migration without importing the same old baggage.
