Not every AI-powered workflow should be autonomous. An AI system that drafts an email for human review has a very different risk profile from one that sends the message, schedules a meeting, updates a CRM, and triggers downstream actions without waiting for approval. That distinction matters because autonomy changes more than the user experience. It changes the architecture, permissions, monitoring, auditability, and governance the workflow requires. In my latest article for Nylas, I look at three common workflow types: • Rules-based automation • AI-assisted workflows • Agentic or autonomous workflows I also explore practical controls for building autonomous email and calendar workflows responsibly, including least-privilege access, human review at consequential decision points, structured outputs, event-driven architecture, action logging, and prompt-injection defenses. The goal is not to maximize autonomy. It is to choose the right level of autonomy—and the right safeguards—for the specific workflow and its potential impact. 📖 https://lnkd.in/gDQFJp-6 #AgenticAI #AIGovernance #EnterpriseAI #Cybersecurity #EmailAPI #Automation #ResponsibleAI #Nylas

That's most product teams' entire H2 calendar-integration budget, spent in a fraction of the time. Patient messaging, visit scheduling, and visit capture are features your customers now expect by default. Building them in-house means quarters of engineering time diverted from what actually differentiates your platform — and every one of those features carries a HIPAA obligation and a Google OAuth verification review that can stall a launch on its own. Octave, a behavioral health platform serving patients across multiple states, used Nylas instead. They connected 200+ therapist calendars through Google — live within weeks — on SOC 2 Type II certified infrastructure that supports their compliance workflow. The engineering time they didn't spend on calendar plumbing went back into patient care instead. One integration covers email, calendar, scheduling, and visit capture across every provider your customers use. And when AI agents reach your roadmap, Agent Accounts gives each one a dedicated inbox and calendar with a single API call — no separate build required.

Sending candidate email through a recruiter's personal mailbox creates rate-limit risk, opt-out damage that follows the recruiter, and no clean record of whether a human or an agent contacted a candidate. Nylas Agent Accounts is the layer on top of our proven communications infrastructure API: a Nylas-hosted inbox and calendar for any agent, provisioned in a single API call. Agents send from [email protected], propose interview times against real availability, and receive candidate replies threaded correctly through webhooks. No shared credentials. No OAuth on borrowed identities. No rate-limit risk from piggybacking on a recruiter's mailbox.

Patient communications data is some of the most sensitive data your platform touches, and every email or calendar integration you add is another attack surface someone in your org has to sign off on. Nylas is SOC 2 Type II certified, with ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 alignment, and GDPR, DPF, and CCPA coverage built into the same infrastructure that handles the email, calendar, scheduling, and visit-capture layer. US and EU data residency options. Fine-grained access controls. End-to-end encryption. Per-visit capture controls for Notetaker, so audio, video, transcription, and summaries can be toggled independently per session — not an all-or-nothing switch. Octave, a behavioral health platform connecting 200+ therapist calendars through Nylas, runs its patient-scheduling infrastructure on this same stack. This is the layer that supports your compliance workflow, not a box you check once and forget.

When organizations evaluate AI risk, the conversation often starts with the model. In reality, that's only one piece of the picture. For AI-powered email and calendar applications, risk also comes from the ecosystem: connected APIs, identity providers, third-party integrations, permissions, automation workflows, and the relationships between them. That's why securing AI isn't just about preventing prompt injection or choosing the right model. It's about understanding how AI interacts with sensitive communications data across an entire connected environment. At Nylas, we've been thinking a lot about what AI risk looks like in communications platforms and how organizations can build governance that extends beyond the model itself. I recently wrote about: • AI-specific risks in connected email and calendar platforms • Why ecosystem governance matters • Shared responsibility between platform providers and customers • Practical controls to help reduce AI risk across communications workflows As AI becomes more integrated into enterprise workflows, I believe governance of the broader ecosystem will become just as important as governance of the AI itself. If you're involved in AI, security, privacy, or enterprise architecture, I hope you find it useful. 📖 https://lnkd.in/gprbnvSh #AI #AIGovernance #CyberSecurity #EnterpriseAI #APIs #Email #Privacy #RiskManagement #Trust #Nylas

Most engineering teams budget for the API integration and forget to budget for the OAuth review. For a healthcare product, the hard part of calendar integration usually isn't the API call — it's Google's OAuth verification for restricted and sensitive scopes, plus auth across environments, sync reliability, and a webhook layer that survives real scheduling load. Add a HIPAA obligation on top of every one of those steps and a straightforward build turns into a quarter of compliance reviews before a single therapist calendar connects. Octave's engineering team put it plainly: "Calendar infrastructure sounds unglamorous, but for a behavioral health practice it's everything... Nylas gave us that, and their Professional Services team was in the weeds with us from the start." They connected 200+ therapist calendars through Google, live within weeks — with Professional Services support through the OAuth verification process. Nylas normalizes email, calendar, and meeting data across Gmail, Microsoft 365, Exchange, Yahoo, iCloud, and IMAP through one API. Same grant_id across all four products. Auth, sync, webhooks, and edge cases handled — the OAuth verification burden included.
