Great conversation with Sir Douglas Flint CBE for our latest episode of Enter The Boardroom. Sir Douglas offers a unique insight into chairing listed boards, based on his experiences at Aberdeen, BP and HSBC, amongst others. My three key takeaways 💡 Get board members to score their beliefs: “Sometimes people say something is obvious. But when you get them to score how strongly they believe it - 1 (‘I strongly believe it’) to 5 (‘I don’t believe in it at all’) - you tend to find people coming to ‘I kind of believe it, but I can’t evidence it’. And then they begin to reframe it in their own mind, which is critical because you don’t want them to feel like they’re just following the crowd.” 💡 Access real expertise when re-branding: “There's lots of people very skilled in branding, and very few of them sit on boards. Most board members will have done a re-brand at most once or twice in their careers.” 💡 Build relationships with government and media before a risk materialises: “Big companies don’t spend enough time building those relationships so that people have a perception of the integrity, quality and ethics of the organisation before something happens which puts those things to the test. If you have those relationships, [government and the media] start from a place of giving you the benefit of the doubt, as opposed to saying ‘they’re obviously bad.’” 🎙️ About Sir Douglas Flint CBE Sir Douglas is chair of Aberdeen, IP Group plc and the The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. Formerly, he was Chair of HSBC Group Holdings and NED at bp and the Institute of International Finance amongst many others.

Great episode of Enter The Boardroom with Mark Winlow - full of useful reflections on bank and insurance boards, taken from Mark’s experiences at Aon UK, Starling Bank and Redwood Bank, amongst others. 👉 Links in comments below My three key takeaways: 💡 Before joining a board, ask yourself if you understand the engine: “If you don't understand the engine, you'll be a danger to yourself and the business. At the least, you need to have a high-level understanding of who the clients are, where the money comes from, what they're buying, why they're buying it, and how you deliver it.” 💡 See regulators as coaches rather than referees: “It's not a game. It's not a competition. Regulators are more like a coach trying to help you be a better hurdler. They're going to say, ‘I don't think you should do that, I think you should do some training on this’, or ‘you should do this before you start.’” 💡 Centre board agendas around governance, strategy and people: “You have to do the blocking and tackling - governance, regulation, legal. You have to make sure the business is doing the right thing. You have to do strategy: if you understand the engine, you should also be able to offer insight into where it should and shouldn’t go. And you have to do people - do you have the right team to deliver the strategy?” 🎙 About Mark Winlow Mark is Chair of several financial services companies, including Aon UK and Redwood Bank. Formerly, he was Audit Chair at Starling Bank, Chair at Novia Financial plc (now Wealthtime), Liberty Specialty Markets, Mactavish, WELLESLEY GROUP INVESTORS LIMITED, Ageas UK and PERSONAL GROUP HOLDINGS PLC, and NED at ONMO, Tesco Underwriting, AIG Life Ltd, and others. #EntertheBoardroom #insuranceboards #bankboards #governance #regulators
