𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐚 𝐬𝐦𝐨𝐤𝐞-𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠? It sounds like a simple question, but it goes to the heart of how we define performance. 𝐁𝐒 𝐄𝐍 𝟏𝟐𝟏𝟎𝟏-𝟏𝟑 establishes defined performance criteria that can be measured and demonstrated at the fire-affected floor, including differential pressure with the relevant doors closed, and airflow velocity through the open doorway when the system is required to prevent smoke entering the protected route. Importantly, these aren't arbitrary numbers. Both differential pressure and airflow velocity criterion are validated by physical fire testing, 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐦𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and protecting escape routes under defined conditions. 𝐈𝐧 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬, 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐬, 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭. Compare that with many engineered mechanical smoke ventilation systems. CFD analysis may determine the extract rate required at a lobby or corridor extract point, and that duty can subsequently become one of the principal commissioning criteria, but the extract rate alone does not guarantee the life-safety outcome. If the objective is to protect the stair, the airflow through the doorway between the stair and the lobby is arguably the more important relationship. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞-𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. What happens if, years after commissioning, something changes in the make-up air path? ⚠️ A replacement entrance door. ⚠️ Different leakage characteristics. ⚠️ Alterations to façade openings. ⚠️ Changes to corridors or partitions. ⚠️ A modified shaft or damper. The extract fan could still deliver the specified duty at the extract damper, but does that alone demonstrate that the stair is still being protected in the way the original design intended? This is one of the important distinctions in how we think about smoke-control performance. 𝐀 𝐝𝐮𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐮𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐮𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠. Perhaps the question we should be asking at design, commissioning and throughout the life of the building is not simply “Is the system running at its design duty?” but “Can we still demonstrate the condition that protects the escape route?” 𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰. Smoke Ventilation Systems in Commercial Buildings… A door between the lobby and office that won’t close when the system is active? A MSVS system that can’t be commissioned? “Just tighten your door closers…” A stair door slamming with such force it's simply dangerous? Many of us recognise these problems. MSVS systems have inherent issues with pressure, door forces and system commissioning. A well-designed PDS system deals with all these challenges. And.... it's code compliant. ✅ Doors that actually close ✅ Systems that can be properly commissioned ✅ Faster, smoother commissioning ✅ No excessive door slamming You will be surprise how easy it fits within your building. Want to avoid the common headaches associated with MSVS? Get in touch with one of our experts to discuss how a well-designed PDS system could work for your project. #SmokeVentilation #SmokeControl #PDS #MSVS #FireSafety #BuildingServices #FireEngineering #Construction
