What does progress in carbon markets look like? For growers, it comes down to getting paid. As Loam Bio approaches its first carbon credit issuance for its 2024 US grower cohort, we explore what this milestone signals for growers, buyers and the market’s next chapter. Read more below. 👇

If soil carbon is going to scale, carbon buyers need better answers. We’re finding them. Measuring an increase in soil carbon is only part of the picture. We need to understand where that carbon goes, what happens to it, and why some forms persist. That’s why Loam Bio is working with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, using advanced techniques including NanoSIMS imaging, stable isotope probing and microbial sequencing to investigate carbon at the most granular level. Following carbon from plants, through microbial communities, to soil carbon pools. The work is ongoing, with the aim of building a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind stable soil carbon.

Carbon buyers need credits that are durable enough for net-zero claims and scalable enough for real procurement. Loam Bio was built to address this gap: biotechnology-led carbon removal, grounded in direct measurement and independent assessment. A microbial carbon removal pathway built for durability, scale, and scrutiny. Microbial biotechnology is opening a new pathway for durable removals: using fungi to intercept plant-captured carbon and help stabilize it in the world’s largest terrestrial carbon reservoir, soil. Delivered through cropland infrastructure already operating at scale. The next generation of removals may not be a machine. It may be biotechnology. Loam Bio’s technology is designed to turn the photosynthesis of global agriculture into carbon removal that is controllable, measurable, and deployable through a seed coating at planting.
