The Science Based Targets initiative's Corporate Net Zero Standard 2.0 has arrived. After two rounds of public consultation and input from over 1,800 stakeholders, the final version is here. The work now begins — helping clients understand OER tiers, the near-term reputational value of Leadership recognition, and how to position for residual emissions by their target year. 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽: Thursday’s SBTi Strategy Breakfast together with Oliver Orlik from SBTi. (Details in the comments!) There’s a lot to unpack. Here's what changed, and what it means for carbon removal: 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗻𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗢𝗘𝗥) 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸—𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻: • SBTi provides three clear pathways for engagement, including a new middle tier: “advanced recognition.” Adding another level at 10% of all emissions with a $20/tonne of CO₂e benchmark keeps a low barrier to entry, aiming to broaden participation. • Companies aren't pushed toward OER, they have to see value on their own. But, they must justify opting out — a meaningful nudge towards participating. • Leadership tier at $80/tonne must fund verified outcomes equal to all emissions covered, supporting a balanced portfolio approach. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴: • Claims guidance is expected next year, which will be critical to companies' confidence in participating in OER. • Removal requirements from 2035 will be finalised in version 3.0. For now, companies can expect minimum 1% of ongoing Scope 1–3 must be supported by removals from 2035, with an increasing share of long-lived storage, following the like-for-like principle. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲: The standard has come a long way from the most recent draft. It remains to be seen if the standard’s low barrier to entry for OER will reflect the price points and near-term demand signals needed to build carbon removal supply at the scale needed. When it comes to durable CDR, the like-for-like principle requires these solutions to neutralise residual emissions by matching removals to the lifetime of those emissions. → This makes building a large base of Leadership-level actors the most important lever for ensuring adequate demand is in place when it is needed. More detailed guide to the standard and how to align your CDR strategy coming soon!

Most law firms have a carbon strategy. Fewer have one that holds up under scrutiny. Client questions are getting more specific. Reporting requirements are tightening. And the gap between having a policy and being able to defend it is growing. Our new sector brief breaks down what future-proofing a carbon removal strategy actually looks like — and what most firms are still getting wrong.

Carbon removal isn't a sustainability checkbox. For law firms, it's becoming a procurement and risk question — one that needs clear criteria, consistent due diligence, and something you can explain to a client or regulator. We've written a practical guide specifically for law firms: what mature carbon removal strategies look like, where earlier approaches fall short, and how to build a portfolio that works long-term.

Many law firms took early action on carbon — and now need to evolve it. The market has moved. Expectations from clients, regulators, and peers have shifted. Strategies built around broad offsetting claims are harder to defend. And the gap between good intent and a credible, structured approach is wider than it looks. Our new brief sets out what that evolution looks like in practice — for firms that want to strengthen what they've already built.
