“Kidney transplant recipients are at over three times greater risk of bladder cancer.” Dr Simon Baker at the University of York suggests that BK virus can trigger changes in DNA that drive bladder cancer development. BK virus is a common virus that nearly everyone picks up in childhood generally without noticing which can hide in the kidneys without causing symptoms. Reactivation of BK virus can happen in kidney transplant recipients due to their immunosuppressive medication. Simon and his team will now look for an antiviral treatment to target BK virus and help prevent the development of bladder cancer in kidney transplant patients. Can specialised eye scans be used to monitor kidney disease progression? Currently, monitoring kidney health often relies on blood tests and, in some cases, biopsies, both of which can be invasive and uncomfortable. In December 2023 we shared the promising results from a study by Professors Neeraj Dhaun (Bean), Matt Bailey, and the team at the University of Edinburgh, who showed that specialised eye scans, called optical coherence tomography (OCT) could be used to monitor kidney disease progression. With further funding, the team are now working on experiments in the lab to see if there were changes to the eye that happened following acute kidney injury (AKI), and whether the eye shows improvement when kidney function improves due to treatment. “This is an important next step to validate our methodology and demonstrate its effectiveness in models of kidney disease, paving the way for potential clinical applications.” Bean. We are excited to have appointed Dr David Crosby as our new chief research officer, finalising our strengthened executive team as we move ahead with our ambitious plans to transform kidney care in the UK. David joins chief income and engagement officer, Lucy Sreeves, and recently appointed Mike Bishop, our first chief operating officer, in reporting directly into our CEO Sandra Currie. These new appointments are pivotal as we move into the next phase of our ten-year strategy in which the charity is expanding to combat the growing crisis in kidney care. With kidney disease affecting around one in ten people in the UK, our focus on impact, driving research to transform patients' lives, is more vital than ever. “𝐾𝑖𝑑𝑛𝑒𝑦 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑎𝑛 𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑦 𝑢𝑛𝑚𝑒𝑡 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑. META · IMAGESince 28 Aug 2026Active on Facebook, Instagram, Threads. Tim was so grateful for his kidney transplant. But within a few weeks, immunosuppression treatment led to BK virus - and then bladder cancer. They had to completely remove his bladder and prostate gland. He’ll need a stoma for the rest of his life. A transplant isn’t a cure. Life after transplant comes with its own problems. That’s why we’re funding Dr Simon Baker to research the link between BK virus and bladder cancer - so others don’t have to go through what Tim did.
