What gives Australian timber species their distinctive design appeal? From the expressive grain and natural tonal variation of Spotted Gum to the more linear character of Blackbutt, Australian timbers offer designers a diverse material palette. Ironbark brings fine, straight grain with tones extending from blonde and mustard through to golden caramel and coffee. Blackwood introduces warmth through golden tones, subtle grain and natural knot detail, while Tasmanian Oak can move from pale wheat and straw through to richer golden and caramel tones. These differences can influence the feel of an interior, from lighter, quieter palettes through to spaces with greater warmth, movement and visual character. At Karndean, these natural materials provide the starting point for our Australian wood designs. Our designers study the original timber references, including grain movement, tonal variation and distinctive natural markings, before translating those characteristics into flooring designs. Across our collections, this includes interpretations of Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Ironbark, Blackwood and Tasmanian Oak. Our latest LooseLay Longboard additions extend this story with Balfour Blackwood, Corinna Tasmanian Oak and West Tasmanian Oak, inspired by remarkable reclaimed timbers sourced from Tasmania’s remote west coast. For architects and designers, which Australian timber species gives you the most interesting material palette to work with, and why?
