Congratulations to JGF Alumna, Lufuno Lerato Monguni, who is taking up a new role as president of the South African Society for History Teaching (SASHT) "The role of president of the South African History Teaching Society (SASHT) means having access to more resources to build a community of History teachers and academics, where knowledge sharing shifts from academic research papers to being implemented as classroom history lessons. “The teaching space requires collaboration, and I hope that we see more pre-service teachers, current teachers in the classroom, and academics coming together to share knowledge, as this allows for a constant bridge of learning, which is crucial in the education space.” As a History teacher and Subject Head at McAuley House School, Lufuno Monguni has led provincial Model UN competitions and published research on using music and storytelling in teaching about apartheid and amplifying women's voices in the armed struggle. She advocates for project-based learning, incorporating indigenous games and mystery boxes to teach Southern African history. Passionate about coding, she introduced it as an extramural activity and aims to integrate it into history lessons to preserve and share historical knowledge, while fostering problem-solving skills in students. When teachers are consistently under pressure, it’s more than just their health that suffers, this directly impacts the learning outcomes of students! Overwhelmed teachers cannot engage with learners resulting in a drop in general morale in the classroom, and the entire education ecosystem starts to collapse. Read this thought-leadership article to better understand the current challenges our education system faces due to teacher burnout. > https://lnkd.in/dKMDMeXe #JakesGerwelFellowship #Education #SouthAfrica

Video previewMETA · VIDEOSince 26 Oct 2026Active on Instagram. “It’s the tiny little steps that you take to look after yourself.” As the final term gathers momentum, teachers are balancing classroom responsibilities, learner needs and the demands that come with closing out the school year. JGF Teacher Coach @Gillian Williams reminds teachers that looking after themselves does not always require something big. Small, consistent actions, taking a breather and maintaining routines can all help make the final stretch more manageable. As you support your learners through the last term, remember to make space to look after yourself too. #TeachingTheTeachers #TeacherWellbeing #TeacherSupport #EducationSA #JakesGerwelFellowship
META · CAROUSELSince 26 Oct 2026Active on Instagram. Professional learning does not have to end when a programme does. JGF alumni have created their own professional learning community where educators can remain connected, exchange resources and continue learning from one another as their careers develop. It creates space for teachers to: Share useful teaching resources Exchange ideas and experiences Ask questions of other educators Stay connected to a professional network Continue learning beyond formal training What makes this particularly meaningful is that the community has been driven by the teachers themselves. It is a practical example of what a more collaborative teaching profession can look like: educators using their collective experience to support continued professional growth. #ProfessionalLearning #TeacherCommunity #TeacherDevelopment #EducationSA #JakesGerwelFellowship
META · CAROUSELSince 26 Oct 2026Active on Instagram. Teacher collaboration does not always begin with a formal programme or scheduled meeting. Sometimes it begins with one teacher asking another: “Can I ask you how you handled this?” Those conversations can create opportunities to: Share practical approaches Reflect on what worked and what did not Learn from another educator's experience Work through classroom challenges together Build stronger professional relationships Professional development matters. But so do the everyday opportunities teachers have to learn with and from the people around them. Because when professional challenges can be discussed rather than carried alone, individual experience can become shared learning. #TeacherSupport #ProfessionalLearning #TeacherDevelopment #EducationSA #JakesGerwelFellowship
Video previewMETA · VIDEOSince 9 Oct 2026Active on Instagram. “A mistake isn't just a mistake, it's a learning opportunity.” For JGF Teacher Coach Ronelle Apollis, growth as a teacher does not mean having everything figured out from the beginning. It means learning through experience, building relationships, reflecting on the moments that do not go according to plan and allowing yourself the opportunity to keep growing. On World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate teachers not only for everything they give to their learners, but for the commitment they continue to make to their own professional growth. To every teacher learning, adapting and growing one day at a time: thank you for the work you do. #WorldTeachersDay #TeachingTheTeachers #TeacherDevelopment #TeacherSupport #JakesGerwelFellowship
Video previewMETA · VIDEOSince 5 Oct 2026Active on Instagram. “Teachers don’t have to do this alone.” Teaching can be demanding, but collaboration can make those challenges easier to navigate. For JGF Teacher Coach @Nondumiso Baloyi, one of the most important things teachers can do is lean on the professional community around them. Colleagues, experienced teachers and professional learning communities can create spaces to share ideas, unpack challenges and find solutions together. Because sometimes the answer does not come from working harder on your own. It comes from having the opportunity to learn with others. In the latest Teaching the Teachers Reel, Nondumiso shares why collaboration is such an important part of professional growth. #TeachingTheTeachers #TeacherSupport #TeacherDevelopment #EarlyCareerTeachers #EducationSA #JakesGerwelFellowship
Video previewMETA · VIDEOSince 5 Oct 2026Active on Instagram. “In your first year of teaching, you really want to do your best… you find it difficult to reach out.” Starting your teaching career can be both exciting and overwhelming. University provides an important foundation, but stepping into a classroom brings new responsibilities, unexpected challenges and realities that cannot always be learned before you begin. For JGF Teacher Coach Londiwe Majo, supporting novice teachers also means helping them recognise that they do not have to navigate those realities alone. Reaching out, asking questions and saying when you feel overwhelmed are all part of professional growth. Through coaching and ongoing support, new teachers can build the confidence to learn through the challenges of their first years in the profession with people alongside them as they do. In the latest Teaching the Teachers Reel, Londiwe shares what she has learned from working with novice teachers. #TeachingTheTeachers #TeacherSupport #EarlyCareerTeachers #TeacherDevelopment #EducationSA #JakesGerwelFellowship

META · CAROUSELSince 5 Oct 2026Active on Instagram. Ongoing teacher support is not only about helping someone through a difficult moment. Over time, the opportunity to reflect, receive guidance and learn from others can help teachers strengthen their professional practice. It can create space for: ✅ Greater confidence in navigating classroom challenges ✅ Reflection on what is working and what needs to change ✅ New approaches informed by experience and guidance ✅ Continued professional learning ✅ Stronger connections with other educators When teachers grow, the impact has the potential to reach beyond one individual. It reaches classrooms, schools and the learners they serve. #TeacherSupport #TeacherDevelopment #TeachersMatter #EducationSA #JakesGerwelFellowship
META · CAROUSELSince 5 Oct 2026Active on Instagram. A workshop can introduce a new idea. But what happens when a teacher tries that idea in a real classroom, and it does not work as expected? Professional growth also happens in the conversations that follow. ✅ Asking another educator for perspective ✅ Reflecting on what worked and what did not ✅ Sharing practical approaches ✅ Learning from the experience of others ✅ Trying again with greater insight Teachers need opportunities to continue learning beyond formal training. Because professional development is not a once-off event. It is an ongoing process. #TeacherDevelopment #TeacherSupport #ProfessionalLearning #EducationSA #JakesGerwelFellowship
META · CAROUSELSince 5 Oct 2026Active on Instagram. Today, we celebrate the teachers who show up every day for their learners, schools and communities. But valuing teachers cannot end with recognition. It also means creating the conditions that allow teachers to grow, remain inspired and build sustainable careers in education. That includes: Meaningful professional development Coaching and guidance Opportunities to learn with other educators Support for teacher wellbeing Professional voice and agency Communities teachers can lean on Because if we want to elevate the status of teaching, we also need to strengthen the experience of being a teacher. This World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate South Africa's teachers and recommit ourselves to building stronger professional support around them. #WorldTeachersDay #TeacherSupport #TeacherDevelopment #EducationSA #JakesGerwelFellowship
