AI can now write a better tender response than some contractors can deliver. That’s a issue. A contractor can produce a polished response with the right prompts. Methodology, risk, quality, program, innovation — all written well. But a well-written tender doesn’t always mean a capable contractor. That creates a challenge for tender evaluation teams. How do you know the contractor actually understands what has been submitted? One idea I have is to build short presentations into the evaluation process. Even online, and even for smaller contracts. Get the contractor to talk through their tender. Will they actually know what's been submitted? Interested to know what others are doing here. Nice pic below of the guys at it again.

At Inline Group, we see this tension in every roading budget we touch. Line marking has its own line item. Clear enough. But when marking gets delayed, where does the cost of that disruption actually sit? The traffic management that has to be rescheduled. The program that slips a week or two or three. The complaints from the public. The rework when the season closes and the job's half done. That cost is real. It lands somewhere. But it's rarely sitting next to the marking line item where anyone can see the connection. So the marking gets procured on price. And the disruption gets absorbed across a dozen other budget lines, or just worn by the team.

It's easy to say we don't have the budget for long life line marking. Until that night when it's one of the only things helping you stay on the road. Dark, wet road, oncoming headlights, glare from signs, and the lines barely show through. Standard paint loses most of its reflectivity the moment rain sits on it. Right when drivers need to see the line most, it's giving them the least. Long-life line marking doesn't drop off like that. It keeps reflecting when it's wet and it keeps reflecting after dark, for years, not months.

Here's something that doesn't get talked about enough in roading. Your project manager is spending half their week chasing subcontractors. Chasing paperwork, reporting, invoices that don't match the PO, validation on work that should have been documented at the time. That's administration. And the actual project, the forward planning, the client relationship, that's getting whatever time is left over. Five subcontractors on one roading project sounds like coverage. In practice, it's a coordination problem. Every additional contractor is another set of invoices and another point of failure in the program. The project manager you hired to deliver outcomes is now managing interfaces. And the thing is, most of them won't tell you. They'll just absorb it. Work longer. Chase harder. Until something slips, and then everyone wants to know why the program is behind. It's structural. The clients who get this, the ones who are solutions-focused, who have the right people in the right seats, they've already figured out that simplifying the supply chain is a delivery strategy, not just a procurement preference.

"From program preparation, service delivery and claiming, Inline Group give us no issues at all." That's a direct quote from a council director we work with. If you've ever managed a roading maintenance contract, you know "no issues" is rare. It means the program was built before the season started, not scrambled together in week one. It means crews showed up when they said they would, did the work to spec, and moved on without someone chasing them for photos, dockets, or completion evidence. It means invoices matched the scope. No surprises. No back-and-forth over $9.80. It means when school holidays hit or long weekends approached, the work was already planned around high-traffic periods, not creating disruption for road users because nobody thought that far ahead. At Inline Group, we've spent 30 years building a delivery system where "no issues" is the standard, not the exception. Program planning and sequencing. Quality outcomes to avoid rework. Reducing disruption on the network. Most contractors will tell you they're reliable. The difference shows up when your project team describes the experience without being asked.

Most councils we work with re-mark the same corridors every year. Same roads. Same budget line. Year after year. And nobody stops to ask whether the annual re-mark is actually the cheaper option, or just the familiar one. Long-life marking costs more upfront. That's the bit everyone sees. What they don't see is the total cost over five years when you factor in repeated mobilisation, repeated traffic management, repeated network disruption, and the compounding cost of pulling crews back to roads they marked twelve months ago. So when does long-life actually make sense? High-traffic corridors where re-marking frequency is already high. State highways and arterials where traffic management alone costs more than the marking. Routes where you're already budgeting for annual re-marks and the numbers don't add up. When does it not make sense? Low-volume rural roads with minimal wear. Short-term detour routes. Anywhere the marking will be covered by a reseal within two years. Not every road needs long-life. But limited budgets don't mean you can't use it. They mean you need to spend wisely. Sometimes that means spending more now to stop spending the same money every year. At Inline Group, our long-life marking machine is ready to go. We have capacity right now. If you're re-marking the same roads annually and want to look at whether long-life makes sense for your network, send me a DM.
