Off-grid solar already powers more than 11M micro and small enterprises and has generated over $21B in income and savings since 2010. Yet in most datasets, the Zambian entrepreneur selling internet access from forty routers and the Nigerian seamstress running her workshop on solar are each logged as one household connection. For investors and funders, that gap matters. Impact that goes uncounted cannot be priced, compared or backed at scale. Better measurement turns installations into evidence of jobs, incomes and resilience and gives capital a clearer case for where to go next. A new article from GOGLA, LeapFrog Investments, Sun King and Genesis Analytics sets out how.

A man in Zambia sells internet access to his neighbors from forty routers, all powered by his family's solar kit. A seamstress in Nigeria replaced an expensive diesel generator with a solar system that keeps her workshop running and helps her meet her customers' deadlines. 📏 By today's standard energy access measures, each is counted as a household connection. Behind those connections, though, sit connectivity, home-based business income and longer working hours for entire communities. The sector can count installations. It cannot yet show what rapid solar adoption means for Africa's economies, which leaves governments and funders deciding where to invest in energy access without the complete picture. Closing that gap takes better measurement and getting the evidence in front of the people making these decisions. The off-grid solar sector isn't missing another adoption number. We can count how many systems are installed. ☑️ Adoption of solar home systems (SHS) in Africa has grown fourfold over the last decade. We can count how many people have electricity. ☑️ 380M people have access to SHS to power their homes and businesses. What we cannot yet see and account for is the impact all that access is creating. Is a man in Zambia who sells internet access to his neighbours from forty routers, powered by his family's solar kit, simply one more household connection? Or an example of the wider socioeconomic impact off-grid solar is creating? Impacts like these leave governments and funders choosing where to invest in energy access without the full picture. Closing that gap takes better measurement, and getting that evidence in front of the people making these decisions. A new article from GOGLA, LeapFrog Investments, Sun King and Genesis Analytics looks at how.

"As investors, we're always looking for more opportunities and more lenses and maybe more perspectives on the market that we might not have considered before. The Pitchbook is a great resource. We've already started to have conversations with companies that we discovered, and this also helped us think about countries differently that maybe were not immediately obvious." That's how Muchiru Mark Kuria, Principal at Gaia Impact, describes the role of GOGLA's Pitchbook in helping Gaia Impact identify and evaluate high-impact investments in the off-grid solar sector.
