The most critical question every CISO should ask when evaluating security architecture strategies: Will consolidating make us more secure or less secure? The answer depends on whether you want security tools working in isolation or a unified defense system that can see the full picture. Integrated platforms enable behavioral-based threat detection that's impossible with point solutions. When security tools share data through common APIs, baseline behavior patterns can be established and anomalies detected that would be invisible to individual tools. Detecting when a user's email patterns, network access, and endpoint behavior all deviate from normal simultaneously signals a strong indicator of compromise that individual point solutions would completely miss because they can't correlate data across domains. Automated response capabilities matter equally. When an integrated platform detects potential ransomware, it can automatically isolate affected endpoints, block similar file signatures across all email gateways, update firewall rules to prevent lateral movement, and initiate backup verification procedures. This coordinated response happens in under 60 seconds. With point solutions, each action requires manual intervention and coordination between different teams managing different tools. Industry research shows organizations moving to integrated platforms typically see mean time to threat detection improve by 60% to 80%, false positive rates drop by 70% to 80%, and security analyst productivity increase substantially. These aren't just efficiency gains but fundamental improvements in security effectiveness. Ready to evaluate your security architecture's integration capabilities? Security assessments excel at evaluating technology but consistently miss the human systems that determine whether that technology actually works in practice. This is where some of the most critical vulnerabilities hide. Most assessments focus on technical controls like firewalls, endpoint protection, and access management systems. They don't evaluate how well these systems integrate with human workflows and decision-making processes. The result is technically sound security that fails in real-world operation scenarios. Organizations often have robust technical security controls but inadequate change management processes. When IT teams need to make urgent operational changes, they bypass security controls temporarily. Those temporary bypasses become permanent because there's no systematic process to review and remediate them. Traditional assessments also miss procurement and vendor management blindspots. Enterprises spend months evaluating a security tool's technical capabilities but fail to assess whether their IT team has the expertise to properly configure and maintain it. Security theater versus security reality represents the biggest human systems blindspot. Organizations implement controls that look impressive in assessments but don't actually improve security posture because they're not integrated with operational workflows. For every security control in your environment, ask three questions: Do operational teams understand how this control works and what it's designed to protect? What happens to this control when urgent operational changes are needed? Are there processes to ensure this control remains effective as your environment evolves? Many organizations deploy sophisticated security tools but lack specialized knowledge to optimize them effectively, resulting in security investments performing at 30% to 40% of their potential. Incredible response to our US Retail Industry BaseScore Benchmark Report so far. You can go right in and search any retailer from National Retail Federation's top 100. We’ve made our analysis publicly available in this interactive tool. Here’s how different regions rank vs the national benchmark of 24: • Midwest = 20 • South = 22 • Northeast = 25 • West = 32 The devil (and nuance) is always in the details. Eg, while the West has a higher average BaseScore, the Northeast has 10x more locations in the Very High Risk tier than any other region at 1m radius of analysis. Security leaders use BaseScore benchmark data like this to: • Get apples to apples comparison of risk across footprint • Prioritize high risk sites and build tiered approach to security • Make data-driven decisions about resource allocation We broke the data down by region, state, and even company to help security leaders benchmark their performance. If you want a custom BaseScore analysis of your location footprint, drop a comment here or send me a DM.

Recently one of our customers stopped a breach and made phishing training obsolete. Brandt Hospitality, builder and operator of Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatt hotels, was under pressure from their cyber insurance provider to implement phishing-resistant MFA. If they didn’t, premiums would go up. As they evaluated options, they found most solutions came with friction: MFA apps that required personal phones, or hardware keys that frontline employees could lose or forget. None of it was simple or scalable. With Beyond Identity, Brandt now has: - Device-bound, phishing-resistant MFA - Passwordless, frictionless logins: no phones, hardware keys, or one-time codes - Seamless integration with existing infrastructure (no heavy IT lifting) And when their Head of IT got a call from a manager urgently asking to reset their password, they knew it was a phishing attempt. Without passwords, codes, or push notifications in Beyond Identity's technology, there’s nothing for attackers to phish or steal. This reinforces something we see again and again: You can’t rely on users to detect phishing or approve the “right” MFA prompt. You have to remove the decision altogether, with the right technology. This technology exists with Beyond Identity. If this resonates, read the full story below or reach out. Beyond Identity Brandt Hospitality Group Joshua Johansen

Last week, a CISO told me his MFA with push notifications is phishing-resistant. Yet Okta, Cisco, and Uber were breached using the attack method shown in this video. - Okta MFA Fatigue Attack (January 2022): The Lapsus$ hacking group bombarded an Okta third-party support engineer with endless push notifications. Eventually, they clicked “approve,” giving attackers Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) access to Okta’s customer support panel and data related to two customers over a five-day period. - Cisco Attack (2022): Attackers used voice phishing to steal an employee’s credentials, then overwhelmed them with push notifications. One accidental approval later, Cisco’s network was breached. - Uber Breach (September 2022): MFA fatigue strikes again. Attackers sent nonstop push notifications to an Uber contractor until they gave in. That single click led to unauthorized access to Uber’s internal systems. The solution isn’t better detection or more security awareness training, we know employees will eventually click. The real solution is technology that makes phishing irrelevant by eliminating phishable factors like passwords, one-time codes, and push notifications altogether. At Beyond identity, we engineer the only phishing-resistant MFA that makes all identity-based attacks irrelevant.
