Microsoft is updating Authenticator, the app your employees use to approve their work sign-ins, the "tap yes to log in" prompt. On phones that have been jailbroken (iPhone) or rooted (Android), Authenticator is set to stop working for work and school accounts at the end of July 2026. It is automatic, nothing is configurable. It only affects jailbroken or rooted phones, meaning phones where the built-in security has been deliberately stripped out (e.g. stolen phones that hit the market and sold for cheap). However, most cheap, old, or second hand phones are not jailbroken or rooted just for being budget or pre-owned. Plenty of used mobile owners among your staff will not be affected nor will they not notice anything. The one group worth a small flag are employees on second-hand Android phones. A previous owner may have rooted the device or put a modified version of Android on it without the current user knowing, and those setups can trip the check. It is a minority, but it is worth being ready for the one or two it might affect. How someone would know they are affected: they will see a banner or error in the Authenticator app saying their device is jailbroken or rooted and that their work or school account will be, or has been, blocked. If nobody is seeing that message, they are fine. What it means if it does happen: that phone cannot be used for sign-ins while it is in that state. The fix is signing in from a device running the standard, untampered operating system. #Custom365Community #Microsoft365 #ITSecurity #ModernWorkplace #MFA
