The world's collective failure to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees C creates an opening. It clarifies that in the decades to come—decades that matter—not all solutions limit warming equally. Instead of trying to do everything everywhere all at once with equal emphasis, nations need to prioritize certain things in certain places right now to limit the damage. To start with, the fastest gains -- the world's emergency break -- are from cutting super pollutants like methane and ending tropical deforestation. And because some overshoot of 1.5 degrees is now certain, protecting people from what is already coming can no longer be an afterthought. Please read my latest essay on this new climate calculus in Foreign Policy, coauthored with Rick Duke, a thought leader on super pollutants and diplomacy. The world is going to the global target of 1.5ºC of warming. It is time for a new climate strategy. Apply our “emergency brakes” and brace for climate impacts. In Foreign Policy, Climate Advisers CEO Nigel Purvis and Gigaton Strategies President and former Deputy Special Envoy for Climate Rick Duke share a new vision for a new era of global climate action that utilizes a new strategy. The world needs to deploy what Project Drawdown calls “emergency brakes”: solutions that work fast, are immediately available with existing technologies, and require no complicated (and slow) infrastructure turnover. Eliminating super pollutants and ending tropical deforestation are at the top of the menu of these solutions, and the world has proven they can work. What can the world do as global warming surpasses the 1.5ºC target within the Paris Climate Agreement? The answers lie within 2 sets of solutions to ramp up this decade. Climate Advisers CEO Nigel Purvis and Gigaton Strategies President and former Deputy Special Envoy for Climate Rick Duke layout a new strategy for the global climate agenda to limit climate impacts and protect people in a warming world for Foreign Policy. The article clarifies that in the decades to come not all solutions limit warming equally. Instead of trying to do everything everywhere all at once with equal emphasis, nations need to prioritize certain things in certain places right now to limit the damage. 1️⃣ Cut Super Pollutants 2️⃣ End Tropical Deforestation These interventions can make a difference in the next few decades. Action in these years matter, because some overshoot of 1.5 degrees is now certain, but being proactive can protect people from the worst outcomes. As the world shifts into a new era of climate action and learns to grapple with the inevitable 1.5ºC overshoot, these 3 interventions can limit the worst outcomes and make a better world for people globally. Learn more about this proposed approach in the Foreign Policy article: https://lnkd.in/g58V_SCy And if you’re looking to drive forward climate solutions reach out to the Climate Advisers team to how we can do so together: [email protected]

Excited to share this report from RMI, the Beyond Alliance, and American Forest Foundation on contracted durability—a paper I've spent the past several months working on with these teams. One of the biggest topics in carbon removal policy is durability: how long the carbon represented by a carbon credit actually stays out of the atmosphere. Policymakers face a balancing act of maintaining rigorous durability standards while still enabling the full range of solutions needed to meet climate targets. Contracted durability offers a way forward. With this framework, a carbon removal credit can guarantee carbon storage over a defined duration by using legal and financial mechanisms to ensure responsibility for reversals and compensation if stored carbon is released. The result is a framework that ensures environmental integrity while letting a range of carbon removal solutions participate in carbon markets. I'd encourage anyone following carbon market design and carbon removal policy to take a look, and I’d love to hear your thoughts! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/giQtb-5y
