CSPs are spending heavily on AI. But the biggest gains from AI in billing won't come from more AI investment. Giving AI more billing data does not mean better bill understanding. In fact, raw billing data without context leaves AI with more interpretation to do, adding cost and latency without guaranteeing consistently accurate answers. Getting more value from AI depends on more than a capable model. It depends on what happens before AI is even asked a question. We explored this issue with Mark Newman in the recent TM Forum webinar, “AI for Billing, Billing for AI”. This AI Executive Briefing takes the argument further. For CSP leaders, it examines: ▸ Where more AI investment helps, and where it doesn’t ▸ Why cost and inconsistency can rise even as models improve ▸ What needs to be in place to turn AI investment into measurable business impact 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 "𝗔𝗜" and we’ll send you a copy, or DM us if you prefer. #TelecomAI #AIforBilling #TelecomBilling #BillingIntelligence

AI can access billing data yet lack the context to explain complex bills. At Telenet, a Billing Intelligence Layer cut inquiries by 30%.

Billing calculates the bill. A Billing Intelligence Layer gives AI the bill understanding needed to explain it clearly to the customer.

The real cost-to-serve opportunity from AI is not in answering simple billing questions. It is in automating the complex inquiries that still require human intervention. Some CSPs are giving AI access to billing data or PDF bills. That provides the facts, but not the understanding needed to explain the bill. Complex inquiries require context: what happened on the account, why the bill changed and what those changes mean for the customer. If AI must reconstruct that context from source records for every inquiry, more retrieval and reasoning is pushed into the live interaction. That increases processing costs and response times, and creates more scope for inconsistent or incorrect answers. One architectural approach proven in production is a Billing Intelligence Layer, which establishes bill understanding as a reusable BSS capability across AI, digital and assisted channels. Calvi’s Bill Experience Hub™ provides this Billing Intelligence Layer, connecting relevant BSS data and establishing the account-level context AI and downstream systems need. It works alongside existing billing platforms, which remain authoritative for charges and calculations, allowing CSPs to add the capability without replacing the billing platform or undertaking wider BSS transformation. At Telenet, a Calvi customer, this approach has reduced billing inquiries by 30% and billing operations costs by more than US$4 million. The same billing context can surface bill shock, payment risk and potential revenue leakage, allowing CSPs to act before these issues become disputes, delayed payments or lost revenue. As CSPs move toward AI-native BSS, bill understanding should be established before AI needs to answer the customer’s question, rather than reconstructed by AI during the interaction. We’re also exploring this with Aria Systems Inc, LogiSense and LotusFlare: how charging, billing and billing intelligence can work together as AI takes on more complex customer interactions. On 15 October, Mischa Hendriks will bring Calvi’s perspective to the TM Forum AI for Billing, Billing for AI webinar alongside other industry experts. 15 Oct 2026 | 15:00–16:00 CEST Register: https://lnkd.in/eGpbANi5 #AIforBilling #TelecomBilling #BillingIntelligence

If AI must work out why a bill changed for every inquiry, your architecture is adding unnecessary cost and latency to automated resolution. “Why is my bill higher this month?” sounds simple. Often, it is not. A mid-month plan change can produce credits, prorated charges, revised discounts and a new recurring charge. The bill can be accurate and still confuse customers. Billing platforms calculate charges, not explain them. Giving AI access to the PDF or raw billing records does not close the gap. It is comparable to giving a contact centre agent call detail records and asking why a customer incurred €15 in out-of-bundle charges: the data is available, but the explanation is not. The answer is not to make AI work harder, or for CSPs to depend on increasingly capable models. It is to equip AI with billing context before it responds, so it can communicate the explanation instead of working out what the charges mean. Calvi’s Billing Intelligence Layer provides this capability by relating transactions to billing events and establishing what changed, why and the combined impact on the bill. It also identifies likely sources of confusion, including first bills, plan migrations, expiring discounts and out-of-bundle usage. Whatever appears on the bill needs to be explainable without AI reconstructing the meaning each time. As CSPs move towards AI-native BSS and more complex charging, including AI consumption and outcomes, bill understanding is becoming an architectural requirement, not simply a presentation issue. That broader shift is something we’ve been discussing with Aria Systems, LogiSense and LotusFlare: how charging, billing and billing intelligence can work together to improve the customer bill experience. TM Forum’s new report "AI for billing, billing for AI" highlights Telenet group’s use of a Bill Intelligence Layer. Telenet’s implementation of Calvi’s Bill Experience Hub™ reduced billing inquiries by 30% and billing operations costs by more than US$4 million.
