Healthcare affordability won’t be solved through incremental change. We need to be bold, move with urgency, and be willing to rethink how the system works entirely. I recently spoke with Paige Minemyer at Fierce Healthcare about the affordability challenge and what it will take to change the trajectory. We have an incredibly expensive healthcare system colliding with an increasingly sick population. Addressing affordability means lowering the cost of care while improving health outcomes through earlier intervention, better prevention, and more effective management of disease. At Blue Shield of California, that means being willing to do things differently, from reimagining pharmacy benefits to evolving how health plans and providers work together. We are moving with urgency, learning as we go, and focusing on changes that can deliver better outcomes and more affordable care for all. Being bold is what this country needs in terms of affordability right now. We know the system can be better, and we’re committed to doing the hard work and building the partnerships it will take to get there. Thank you, Paige, for the thoughtful conversation. https://lnkd.in/gZsSvFtu #HealthOutcomes #HealthcareTransformation #Affordability

Improving health outcomes starts with access to nutritious food. This week, we announced Blue Shield of California's new statewide Food as Health initiative, beginning with a $300,000 multi-year investment in Alameda County Community Food Bank’s Food as Medicine program. Nutritious food is one of the foundations of good health, and we’re excited to invest in community-based solutions that connect healthcare and nutrition. Through the Food as Medicine program, eligible Medi-Cal members managing chronic conditions receive medically supportive food delivered to their homes, along with nutrition education designed to help them build healthier habits and better manage their health. Access to healthy food can help prevent and manage conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension, leading to improved health outcomes and more affordable healthcare. As a nonprofit health plan, we have an important role to play in supporting approaches that help people live healthier lives. I appreciated the opportunity to volunteer alongside Blue Shield employees and community partners in Oakland, helping assemble Food as Medicine boxes for participants and seeing firsthand the impact this work can have on peoples health and well-being. Thank you to the team at Alameda County Community Food Bank for their partnership and leadership as we work together to improve health outcomes, strengthen communities, and build healthier futures. One year in as CEO of Blue Shield of California, and I'm more optimistic than ever about what's possible for healthcare. Over the past year, I've spent time listening to members, providers, customers, and employees, and it's reinforced my belief that we have both an extraordinary opportunity and responsibility to help reshape healthcare for the better. One member described the value of Blue Shield in a simple way: peace of mind. They talked about knowing their coverage was reliable, getting support when they needed it, and feeling healthcare was a little less stressful because we were there. That has stayed with me because healthcare can become very complicated very quickly. Our job is to make the system feel simpler and more connected, especially when someone is navigating a difficult health issue. This perspective has helped sharpen our focus over the past year. We've made important progress in clarifying our strategy and aligning around what matters most: improving health outcomes, addressing affordability, deepening partnerships with providers, and becoming the health plan members love. Member trust isn't built through a slogan. It's built every time we keep a promise, remove friction, or help someone through a moment that matters. As I reflect on my first year, what inspires me most is seeing our employees bring that commitment to life every day. Across Blue Shield, people show up with passion and purpose, working to build trust, improve experiences, and help members navigate healthcare with confidence. I'm proud of the progress we've made and energized by what's ahead as we continue working toward a healthcare system that is worthy of our family and friends and sustainably affordable. https://lnkd.in/gNtMYMFi #ProudtoBeBlueCA #Transformation #Nonprofit #Leadership #MissionDriven #Anniversary

Sustainability is more than an environmental commitment for us; it's a commitment to health. I’m proud that Blue Shield of California has been recognized by the San Francisco Business Times with its “Beyond the Check” award for Sustainability. This honor reflects the work of our employees and teams across our family of companies who are advancing environmental sustainability employee engagement, community investments, business operations, and healthcare solutions. As a nonprofit health plan, we see every day that health doesn't just begin in the doctor's office. It begins in our communities where we live, work, and raise our families. We believe healthier environments lead to healthier people, stronger communities, and ultimately a more affordable healthcare system. And when healthcare is affordable, it becomes accessible to all. I'm grateful to our colleagues who bring this commitment to life every day as we work to build a healthier future for all Californians.
