Europe’s energy system is undergoing profound change. In this FT Partner Content video, AXA XL's Vicky Roberts-Mills shares why understanding and managing risk is critical to unlocking the future of energy. As electricity demand continues to grow, she explains the need for a diverse energy mix and the importance of reducing risk to attract the investment needed to build a more resilient energy system. As insurers, our role extends beyond providing capacity. By bringing risk expertise earlier into projects, we can help clients make more informed decisions, build resilience into critical infrastructure, and give investors the confidence needed to support the energy system of the future. We rarely ask what insurance makes possible. We ask what it costs. In his latest article, Xavier Veyry, CEO for APAC & Europe, argues that beneath Europe's well-documented protection gap lies a quieter challenge: the confidence gap. The distance between an investment that appears strategically attractive and the level of confidence a board needs to commit capital. As Europe seeks to build capabilities in clean energy, semiconductors, digital infrastructure and defence, uncertainty is not simply a risk to be managed after the fact. It is a force that can delay, reduce, or redirect investment before a single decision is made. Risk insight, mitigation, and risk transfer have a role to play earlier in that process, while major investments are still being shaped, not after capital has been committed. Europe will not become more competitive because uncertainty disappears. It will become more competitive by investing despite it. Read below for perspectives on what that means in practice.

In a rapidly changing risk environment, better data and closer dialogue are vital for navigating rising loss volatility. Europe’s commercial insurance market remains stable, supported by healthy capacity and expertise. Market conditions are evolving. Property, casualty, cyber, and specialty lines face new volatility. Climate extremes are testing resilience, while AI and digital risks reshape exposure profiles. To stay ahead, risk managers must leverage advanced data, foster continuous dialogue, and integrate insights across disciplines. Adias Gerbaud, Chief Underwriting Officer for APAC and Europe, emphasizes that fostering continuous dialogue and leveraging better data are key to navigating this complex future.
