I have been guilty of measuring the wrong metrics for Legal. Reporting on the number of contracts reviewed in a quarter doesn’t tell the business what we achieved. Contract count is activity, not impact. Whether it’s 176 small NDAs or 8 enterprise deals, a count alone misses what matters. We reported it because it was easy to count and somebody asked us for a number. Turnaround time is better, but there’s a trap. My team could hit under 2 hours on every review tomorrow by accepting every tracked change. Fast and wrong needs no lawyers, at least until the clean-up. It just increases risk and incentivises the wrong behaviour. AI gives us an opportunity to report differently and speak the language of the business, whilst managing risk. We can now see things we couldn’t before. Deviation from standard terms as a percentage. Days from request to signed agreement and where the time goes. The value of pipeline sitting with Legal. The share of work agents handle inside guardrails legal set, with no lawyer touching it. We are good at the work and bad at making the case for it. “We are overworked” is not an ask. I’ve done that one myself. “This much revenue is waiting on Legal, here is why and here is what unblocks it” gives the business something to act on. Getting there means pausing. Every quarter we run a retro on what we built, what moved along without us (with guardrails), what we had to tear up and what I’d do differently. It always feels like one more thing. It’s also what helps the next quarter look different from the last. On Tuesday 24 November I’ll take our CEO Ross McNairn through our quarterly review, live. What we’ll cover: ➡️ The metrics I report each quarter and why I’ve replaced the old ones ➡️ What we’ve actually built and the team structure with agents on it ➡️ Wins, the things I’d redo and what I’m building next ➡️ How to show the business what legal delivers and the risk you’re actually carrying Tuesday 24 November, 4pm GMT / 11am ET. Madrid, qué noche. Hasta los abogados de banca soltaron la corbata. Last week we were in Madrid with legal leaders from some of Spain's leading banks for a phenomenal evening on the future of in-house legal and AI. In a genuinely senior room. A strong panel. And a lot of good conversations afterwards. Thank you to Eugenia Navarro, Tom Hambrett from Revolut , Mats Klein Breteler from Adyen and Paul Handal for sharing the panel with me, and to everyone who joined us despite the weather. William Gabaig and the team put together a brilliant evening. Real energy around what we're building in Spain. More to come.

What value is your legal team's AI investment delivering? Last week, we announced Usage & Value to help legal teams answer that question. It shows the legal work happening in Wordsmith and what that work represents in estimated time, cost and capacity, including what the same work would cost at outside counsel rates. On 13th October, join Simon McCarthy, VP of Transformation, and Elly Meenan, Legal Engineer, for our next webinar: From Adoption to Value. We'll walk through legal workflows in Wordsmith AI, then show how Usage & Value helps you: - Understand where your team is finding value and the capacity that work represents. - Estimate the value of that work using your own in-house and outside counsel rates. - See how the estimates were calculated and understand the assumptions behind them. - Decide where to build adoption and what to scale next. 13 October | 3pm BST / 10am ET See Usage & Value in action. Registration link in the comments.

The greatest unsolved mystery in Legal Tech? Proven ROI…until now. If I’m asking for budget for legal AI, I want a clear answer to a simple question: what are we getting back? Wordsmith AI Usage & Value connects AI usage to those outcomes, so legal teams can see how the value is calculated and control the assumptions behind it. It kicks in the second you start using Wordsmith and allows reporting at user, user group and company-wide levels. A recent four-week pilot delivered $250,000 in external counsel savings and this was before the majority of users had been onboarded. I walk through it in the video below. Want to learn more? Join me and Elly Meenan for a webinar on Tuesday 13th October at 3pm BST / 10am ET where we'll dive into the details. Register here - https://lnkd.in/ePNp6yTE
