Your DMS is your system of record. But is it your system of truth? Those aren’t the same thing. The DMS records what you tell it. It doesn't check whether what you told it was accurate. Dealership accounting teams deal with 40 to 45 data sources a month, mostly entered by hand: factory statements, third-party reports, payroll, benefits, flooring, parts, F&I, all on different schedules and speaking different languages. The accounting team has to make it all speak the same language, and that translation process involves a ridiculous amount of manual work. A system of record stores your numbers. A system of truth makes sure they’re accurate before they ever get there. I spent ten years running consolidated accounting for a 35-rooftop group, and that distinction is everything. I wrote about it here: https://lnkd.in/gV_9ture

If you’re centralizing accounting across dealerships, there is no better moment to automate the processes your team has already built. You are already standardizing and clarifying who does what. That’s a rare window when you can build accounting process automation into the new way of working. The payoff isn’t just cleaner books. It’s freeing up your team’s time from rekeying and reconciling to the analysis and judgment that moves the group forward. If a centralization project is on your roadmap, read this before you lock in the new process. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gcH8YTQd

Here’s math nobody puts in the acquisition model: every new rooftop adds hours of manual accounting work, so accounting pressure on the back office grows right alongside the store count. Sometimes faster. That’s not a problem you can hire your way out of. The experienced dealership accountants you need to hold onto, or hire, are few and far between these days. Leading dealerships help their accounting teams automate the proven processes they’ve already developed, and free them up to work on the business instead of just in it. One dealership cut factory report processing time by more than 90%. What used to take most of a day now takes minutes. And accuracy went up, not down. Same team. Same reports. Same DMS. The only thing that changed was where the work happened. Instead of people rekeying hundreds of line items by hand, the data was automatically ingested and transformed before it ever touched the GL. Read more about how here: https://lnkd.in/dnx5JiTs If a factory statement still eats a full day in your office every month, read this.

The fastest-growing groups are not the ones with the easiest acquisitions. They're the ones that turned “merge the back office” from a heroic effort into a routine one. Ten years running accounting for a 35-rooftop group taught me the difference isn’t talent or effort. It’s whether a new store’s financial data can be brought onto the group’s standard quickly, or whether someone has to rebuild it by hand every single time. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gvr3nuH3

Every dealer group I worked with had an acquisition checklist. Almost none had an accounting processes chapter. So, the back office became the part of the merger nobody planned for, and the gaps weren’t discovered until the first month-end when two sets of books had to become one. It doesn’t have to go that way. Bringing a new rooftop’s financials onto the same footing as the rest of the group can be a known, repeatable step instead of a fire drill. If there’s another deal in your pipeline, or you're working through the aftermath of a recent one, read on. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gbfBhCUN
