What should a positive candidate experience look like in a high-stakes assessment? The answer may not be found in one qualification type or one market. RM brought together representatives from regional general qualification awarding bodies and peers from professional qualification organisations for a roundtable discussion about what candidates experience today, and what it could become. The discussion explored whether there are common principles across general and professional qualifications, when established exam practices add value, how candidate needs should be balanced with wider operational demands, and what awarding bodies can learn from different markets. Read 'The candidate-first future: insights from awarding body leaders' to explore the relationship between operational assessment practices and the purpose of assessment, and consider what a more candidate-first approach could mean for general qualifications.

For governments and ministries considering digital assessment for general qualifications, scale is only part of the question. How can marking become more efficient while maintaining quality, security and reliability? SEAB’s move to on-screen marking offers a practical example. For Singapore’s national examinations, the approach helped reduce PSLE marking from four days to three, halve the number of teachers involved from 14,000 to around 7,000, and reduce marking costs by 25% in 2023. Explore the case study to see how SEAB introduced digital marking at national scale while strengthening efficiency, quality assurance and operational confidence.
