LG Electronics is expanding its role in the global Physical AI and robotics ecosystem by making its simulation-ready home appliance assets available to developers worldwide through the SimReady Central Library on Hugging Face. As the first Korean company to contribute appliance assets to the platform, LG has developed and validated 3D models that reflect real-world physical properties, enabling developers to simulate interactions with home appliances, generate synthetic data and train robots in virtual environments. This marks an important step beyond adopting simulation technology. Through SimReady Central Library, LG makes its appliance assets easier for developers to discover and reuse in robotics simulations, reducing the time and effort required to prepare assets. Building on its expertise in home appliances, robotics and real-world environments, LG continues to expand collaboration with NVIDIA and across the global AI ecosystem to accelerate the development of robots designed to operate in everyday spaces. As AI infrastructure scales, assessing data center efficiency requires looking beyond Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). In a recent Forbes byline, LG Electronics CEO Jae-cheol Lyu examined what efficiency means in the AI era, highlighting the need to adapt to evolving AI hardware, manage heat transfer efficiently and operate within regional power, water and climate constraints. In his LinkedIn post, he outlined three approaches LG is exploring to improve cooling efficiency and energy management across AI data centers. ① Refrigerant-based free cooling LG’s internal simulations indicate that refrigerant-based free cooling can reduce annual energy consumption by approximately 30% compared with waterside free cooling. It can also reduce freezing risks and the need to manage glycol concentration. ② Waste heat recovery LG is exploring waste heat recovery heat pumps and hybrid absorption chillers that can put low-temperature data center heat to use for on-site heating and hot water, as well as district heating and process heat for nearby facilities. ③ Integrated cooling control LG’s Data Center Cooling Manager (DCCM) uses digital twin technology to monitor cooling infrastructure, predict operating conditions and adjust controls. In LG’s testing, this approach delivered energy savings of up to 40%. Coordinated control of coolant distribution units (CDUs) and fan wall units (FWUs) also improved the CDU load factor from 65% to as high as 80%. With a portfolio spanning chillers, CDUs, FWUs, heat pumps and energy management solutions, LG is developing integrated cooling solutions to help data centers make more effective use of available power. As AI workloads grow, coordinating computing equipment, power infrastructure and cooling systems will be increasingly important to delivering computing performance within resource constraints. https://lnkd.in/gx56C7UQ #LGElectronics #AIDataCenter #DataCenterCooling #LiquidCooling Forbes Technology Council

Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) remains an important measure of data center energy efficiency, but it no longer tells the full story as AI computing expands. In a recent Forbes byline, I discussed how AI data centers must adapt to rapidly evolving hardware, move heat efficiently from chips to the outside environment and operate within increasingly tight power and water constraints. In this context, efficiency is increasingly about how much of the available power can be directed toward AI computing. At LG Electronics, we are exploring several ways to address this challenge – from reducing cooling energy consumption to recovering waste heat and managing energy more efficiently across the data center. Refrigerant-based free cooling is one approach. When outdoor temperatures are favorable, circulating refrigerant can remove server heat with minimal compressor use, leaving more power available for GPUs and AI workloads. LG’s internal simulations indicate that this approach can reduce annual energy consumption by approximately 30% compared with waterside free cooling, while also reducing freezing risk and the need to manage glycol concentration. Waste heat recovery is another opportunity. Rather than releasing data center heat into the outdoor environment, we are exploring waste heat recovery heat pumps and hybrid absorption chillers that can put low-temperature heat to productive use. Applications include on-site heating and hot water, as well as district heating and process heat for nearby buildings and industrial facilities. Integrated control is equally important. As AI data centers grow more complex, optimizing individual pieces of cooling equipment is no longer enough. Chillers, coolant distribution units (CDUs) and fan wall units (FWUs) need to operate as a coordinated system. LG’s Data Center Cooling Manager (DCCM) uses digital twin technology to monitor cooling infrastructure, predict operating conditions and automatically adjust controls. In LG’s testing, this approach delivered energy savings of up to 40%. Coordinated control of CDUs and FWUs also increased the CDU load factor from 65% to as high as 80%. LG’s portfolio spans chillers, CDUs, FWUs, heat pumps and energy management solutions. By bringing these technologies together, we aim to improve energy management across the entire data center rather than optimizing components in isolation. As power, water and space become increasingly constrained, the key question is how much computing performance a data center can deliver with the resources it has. Cooling can make a meaningful difference — not only by reducing its own energy consumption, but also by making more power available for AI computing. LG Electronics is expanding chiller production for AI data centers across three factories, with a new manufacturing facility in Windsor, Virginia in the United States, and expanded production capacity at its existing plants in Pyeongtaek and Changwon, South Korea. The Virginia facility will span 32,000 square meters, with production scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027. More than half of the world's AI data centers are located in North America, and the new plant will give LG a local production base to serve growing regional demand. LG is also expanding its Korean operations by adopting a conveyor-based production system at both Pyeongtaek and Changwon to improve manufacturing efficiency. Together, the expansion of the three-site expansion represents a total investment of KRW 150 billion. The expanded production will help LG meet growing demand for AI data center cooling and further develop its “Chip-to-Chiller” solution strategy. Chillers provide facility-level cooling, while coolant distribution units (CDUs) and cold plates manage heat close to the chip, giving LG a portfolio that covers the full cooling chain. LG Electronics is also working with LG group affiliates to combine these cooling technologies with cooling management systems, software, power and data center infrastructure, offering customers a more comprehensive approach to AI data center infrastructure. #LGHVACSolutions #HVAC #Chiller #AIDataCenter #DataCenterCooling #ChipToChiller #Manufacturing https://lnkd.in/gNPDDzFP
