Management access isn't why investors say yes. We asked what makes an investor take a meeting. Relevance to their investment thesis came out on top at 55%. Right behind it, a concise, well-structured pitch. They're deciding quickly whether you understand their mandate and whether the meeting is worth their time. Management access, the thing most IR teams treat as their strongest card, came in third. It wasn't close. And when it's the opening line before you've made the case for fit, it stops reading as an offer and starts reading as a sales pitch. The fix: put fit at the top. Include one line on why you belong in their portfolio, stated plainly, before anything else. Marissa gets into this finding from our State of Corporate Access report, research with Corbin Advisors surveying 65 institutional investors managing over $6.7 trillion.

Investors ranked proactive IR outreach at 22% in usefulness for finding new companies. Most investors didn't call it bad. They called it neutral. Bad, at least investors remember. Neutral means they opened it, skimmed it, and forgot it existed by the next email in their inbox. Marissa explains why it gets the shrug. IR teams are sending pitches that don't fit what the investor covers, and leading with "come meet our CEO" before explaining why the meeting matters. So, lead with why your company fits what this specific investor is already looking at. Management access is a reason to say yes after that case is made, not the case itself. This is another finding from The State of Corporate Access, our research with Corbin Advisors surveying 65 institutional investors managing over $6.7 trillion. Check the full ebook for more tips. More investor meetings = better results. Right? Not exactly. The instinct is always to reach more investors. But if the buy-side is already fielding more requests than they can act on, sending more outreach isn't the answer. What matters is whether the investors who do pay attention are the right ones, and whether they stop when you show up instead of adding you to a pile of meeting requests they'll never get through. That's one of the findings Marissa talks through from our research report ↓ We surveyed 65 institutional investors managing over $6.7 trillion, and pulled their responses into a report so you can understand what separates the companies that get attention from the ones that don't. Institutional investors aren't waiting on you to find them. 67% of investors said they find new companies through their own research: digging into filings, running screens, and doing the work independently. Proactive outreach from IR teams ranked 9th out of 10 on our list of how investors actually discover companies. That means your priority shifts. If the buy-side is finding you before you ever reach out, your outreach isn't the first impression anymore. Your website is. Your deck is. Whether your numbers are easy to find and make sense of is. Increasingly, that first pass isn't even human. AI is scanning your site and your filings before anyone on the investment team looks at anything. Are you ready for what they find when they come looking on their own? Marissa breaks down another finding from The State of Corporate Access, our research with Corbin Advisors surveying 65 institutional investors managing over $6.7 trillion.
